Pope Francis issues first 'joint' encyclical [Says Same Sex Behavior is a Sin]
BBC ^ | 7/5/13

Pope Francis has paid tribute to his predecessor Benedict XVI in his first letter to clergy, acknowledging that most of it was written by Benedict.

The encyclical to Roman Catholic bishops, called Light of Faith ("Lumen Fidei" in Latin), speaks of faith as a beacon of hope for those who suffer...

... the document says that modern society tends only to accept the truths of technology and science.

In a passage relating to faith and family life, the Pope restates the Church's opposition to gay marriage.

There you go, liberals. The most visible symbol of Christendom isn't moved to celebrate sodomy.

Africa and Asia are in many ways more adherent to Judeo-Christian ethics than the West.

The Catholic Church will outlast America.

This pope has stayed true to Jesus’ call there.

Two opposite sex participants, or virtuous singlehood.

But it’s pretty obvious even to this here Protestant. This is NOT talking about male bonding, not even a David-and-Jonathan pal relationship where one obtained garments for the other. May their tribe increase; there is way too much isolation in society. But they weren’t “married” and they didn’t do violent things to one another and call it love.

Excellent. Some people were unsure with a new pope from a different world.

Civilization needs a pope who is strong in opposition to sexual deviance. The priest - little boys scandal is not diminishing without clarity.

Same thing happened to Rome.

Within the Body of Christ, nothing good is ever lost. So when America falls, she will live on through the Church.

I don’t like the Catholic church. But it is the Catholic church that stands most prominently against abortion. Now this. I am grateful for their stands and I hope that they will advance the cause against our cultural sins.

Well, if you are Christian and believe that they are (however mistaken in some particulars) Christians too, they should be loved as brothers and sisters despite disagreeing with some of their ideas. Personally I couldn’t grok the saint hailing stuff the way they do it... seems to me the big attention in the practice goes to the saint and not to the Lord, which is a trouble flag to serious evangelicals... and I couldn’t pledge myself to that kind of worship. Even if I could speak to saints in the hereafter I’d be doing so as brothers and sisters and praising the Lord in the process. Not just begging favors then goodbye.

Those who have paid attention to this Pope and what he has done in the past are not at all surprised by this pronouncement. There will be more such pronouncements to be sure.

And to really get me going as an evangelical... okay, they put their transsubstantiated communion elements on display for adoration. OK fine, if that’s what they really are, one might logically adore them, but if that’s Jesus why can’t we pray to them and get answers? Again, trouble flag....

I've got family members who are anti-abortion and anti-sodomy, and support Obama 100%. It makes my teeth ache.

He sounds like a reasonable, relatively orthodox man. Far more surprising would be for him to say such violent abominations are okay. If there is one thing that the Roman Catholic church does very well, it’s the explicit recognition of the proper, sanctified use of nature, including sex and life issues.

Not just begging favors then goodbye.

That's a valid criticism. But some people treat God the same way.

We should ask the saints to pray for us, just as we ask other Christians to pray for us. It's an important part of our prayer life.

Christians represent the Body of Christ. So prayer should be "horizontal," through the Body of Christ, and "vertical," aimed directly at God.

What will the church do about the priest I happened to see on CNN, who said that since the population consists of 10% homosexuals that we might safely assume that 10% of priests are homosexual and that the Catholic church does not consider homosex a sin?

This was a couple of weeks ago and my gaydar was pinging the whole time he was talking.

I know that he was obviously lying through his teeth but can the church not at least stifle him?

We all bear our burdens. I have a 92 year old mother, Roosevelt democrat, who is against those things too and she wouldn't vote for a non democrat.
