On a blistering July 4 morning, nearly 1,500 people jammed Rehoboth Beach for a Freedom Rally celebration featuring music, veterans and prayer.
A portion of the beach at Rehoboth Avenue had been sectioned off, but the crowd quickly overwhelmed the area as people lined the dune-crossing and the Boardwalk in front of a small stage.
"We were just hoping for a peaceful service," said event organizer Christian Hudson. But the event far exceeded his expectations.
Hudson organized the rally after the Rev. Robert Dekker, senior pastor of New Covenant Presbyterian Church, was denied a permit to hold eight Sunday services at the Bandstand.
"For a normal service, we'd have 25 or 30 people," Hudson said. "It's just great to see people come out and support your civil rights What is more personal than your right to worship and believe according to your own rights of conscience?".......

I went to Rehobeth as a kid, one time. Didn’t it used to be a [real] Amish vacation destination?
I was really fascinated when I read this story.
I stopped going to Rehoboth in the mid 70’s and I know people who still go there. I’ve also heard about the gay element that frequents it now.
Good for Reverend Dekker for two reasons.
One, he desires to spread his faith. Two, he desires the freedom to do so and the Constitution gives him that right.
I listened to Reverend Dekker’s father on the radio many years and he was a radio preacher who gave you the religious message alongside the Constitutional one.
A son follows in his father’s footsteps in Southern Delaware today.
Yes, Rehobeth is notoriously gay and that’s the real reason the Christians were originally denied their permit.
The end game of “rights” for LGBT folks is the denial of civil rights to religious folks and that is utterly against the Constitution of the United States.
Moron. She has a right to not listen. And she wasn't forced to hear it. She has the right to go somewhere else. Unlike the children in public schools that are *forced* to listen to the sh1t she believes in.

Does that bring back childhood memories! Yes... back in the 70’s and 80’s, I do remember Amish folks walking on the boardwalk or wading in the waves. Back in those day, “Spring Lake” was sort of silently designated as the straight/gay beach area. (the man made lake area/beach area at the very end of the boardwalk). However, any part of Rehoboth is now visibly straight and gay.
I was there. It was fantastic. A WWII Vet spoke and was quite a powerful speaker. The beach was blanketed with people in chairs. It was a proud 4th of July!
Use to live down the street from him. His home was my one mile mark on my morning run.
Went to Rehobeth many times and enjoyed the Black Pearl Resaurant but, felt more at home in Lewes.
1500 people is a LOT of people for an event in little Delaware.
That is actually about equal to the entire year round population of Rehoboth Beach.
Rehoboth was founded as a Methodist Camp Meeting ground by the Rev. Adam White in 1873. Four years earlier, Rev. White helped to found Ocean Grove, NJ in 1869,a Methodist Camp Meeting Ground just south of Asbury Park, NJ. Some of you may have attended events and concerts in the Great Auditorium there, built in 1894, that can seat about 2500 people.
Up until Tuesday, the permit was still being denied for the beach event. Pastor Dekker was on the Glenn Beck’s radio show on Monday, and Fox and Friends on Tuesday(?). There was a LOT of pushback from local Christians, churches and pastors, and lots of local patriots, including yours truly, and made things uncomfortable for RB.
The reason for denial was the separation of church and state and was a red herring, and completely wrong.
Glad to see so many came out to RB to support this event.
I was at the Circle in Georgetown,DE, where four GOP DE state senators read the entire Declaration of Independence, including the names of those who signed the document.
About 50 people came out.

We are all still sinners saved by the Grace of God but those poor lost souls who resent a biblical message from that bandstand, are lost in darkness and condemned to spend their eternity away from God, as they have demanded.
The signers of the Declaration believed God gave us this land to worship as we choose (or not to) but never to deny others to worship Him,

What does that mean?
When it comes to politics... I fail time and again... mostly dealing with passion over this republic that I so love. I feel what our Founders felt... I understand them as if I had lived through those times... I share their love of Freedom and Liberty and how GOD is woven into the very fabric of this Republic. Maybe I was just born in the wrong Century.

If you walk up the beach from Dewey, which is visibly straight (about as many females as males), you come to a part of the Rehobeth Beach which is visibly all-male. Looks very weird to have no bikini bras on the beach.
Bethany Beach is the family beach. Rehoboth is the queer one with Ocean City, MD being the rowdy one.
Good thing for us you don’t have to walk by the queer part to get to the straight part.
