Preamble to the Declaration of Independence

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

I'm off until Monday - a ton of things to do around the house. We'll sneak in some steaks on the Grill sometime, depending om John-Man's work schedule. I'm not going to the fireworks this year, but there are a few things I will do to commemorate this essential Day in our History.

When you schedule an instrumentalist whose instrument rarely shows up in the chamber music repertory, the Artistic Director has to come up with enough material to keep the musician occupied for the entire week. I imagine Jimmy Ehnes had to ask German trumpeter Jens Lindemann for a list of possible pieces. We heard two of them before, and tonight is the Jolivet piece for trumpet and percussion. Michael Werner holds the principal percussion chair with the Seattle Sympony.

Cynthia Phelps, viola
Julie Albers, cello

Jesse Mills is new to the Festival. Cynthia Phelps is principal viola with the New York Philharmonic, and she plays this huge 17 inch viola. I once told her I would hate to meet that viola in a dark alley. She is married to cellist Ronald Thomas who plays in the next piece. Cynthia and Ron met at the first Festival in 1982 and married shortly thereafter. They have a passel of musicians coming up in their North Jersey home.

Ronald Thomas, cello

When people see Augustin Hadelich from a distance, they wonder if he is wearing makeup. Close up, you can see the damage done by the agricultural fire in Germany that disfigured his face. They weren’t sure he would live. But he survived, and he’s one of the most promising young violinists in the game today. Ron Thomas is a perennial at the Festival, and his suggestions for pieces to program are among the best around.

3 July 1863 – Day Three

On July 3, Lee, having failed on the right and the left, planned an assault on Meade's center. A 15,000-man strong column under General George Pickett was organized, and Lee ordered a massive bombardment of the Union positions. The 10,000 Federals answered the Confederate artillery onslaught, and for more than an hour the guns raged in the heaviest cannonade of the Civil War. At 3 p.m., Pickett led his force into no-man's-land and found that Lee's bombardment had failed. As Pickett's force attempted to cross the mile distance to Cemetery Ridge, Union artillery blew great holes in their lines. Meanwhile, Yankee infantry flanked the main body of "Pickett's charge" and began cutting down the Confederates. Only a few hundred Virginians reached the Union line, and within minutes they all were dead, dying, or captured. In less than an hour, more than 7,000 Confederate troops had been killed or wounded.

It’s just entirely too hot to attend any festivities here.

So it will be the local channels & Boston pops on TV for us.

I plan some good food for the family & a marathon of the John Adams series from HBO.

Special Independence Day Edition



Nine and one-half months after the Massacre at our Benghazi Facility, I am impelled to repost “The Grey-Haired Brigade” in dedication to the gallant Navy Seal Vets, Tyrone S. Woods and Glen Doherty, who fell in combat 11Sep2012 in Benghazi, Libya.

Their valor, deeds and sacrifices remain unacknowledged by the Obama Regime, the Fifth Column and the camp-followers and useful idiots who keep them in power.

Their Heroism on behalf of our Nation demands recognition! Now, over nine months from the day they gave their all in our defense, the Obama Regime and its minions continue to prevaricate and stonewall regarding the circumstances of the Benghazi Massacre!

No answer from the CIA! No answer from the Department of Fairies! No answer from the Quisling-in-Chief or any of his scrofulous surrogates!

Where are the other thirty or more survivors of the massacre? What was their mission in Benghazi? Was this "Mission" in place for any other reason than to run weapons from the Islamists in Libya to the Islamists in Syria?

Those and a plethora of other questions continue to fester in the wake of this debacle – and the Obama Regime is conspicuous by its silence on this fiasco!

I demand answers for this debacle from those in office who, at least putatively, serve me and all citizens of this great Nation! Woods and Doherty, and their grieving families demand answers for the loss of their valiant sons who fell defending our interests in this debacle! The loyal citizens of this Nation, who themselves have hazarded all for our Freedom, and whose sons and daughters do so now in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other remote lands demand answers for this debacle! Yes, Mrs. Clinton, it does indeed make a difference!

May God Bless all who take up arms and suffer themselves
to be placed in harm's way to preserve our Freedoms!

The Grey-Haired Brigade

They like to refer to us as senior citizens, old fogies, geezers, and in some cases dinosaurs. Some of us are "Baby Boomers" getting ready to retire. Others have been retired for some time. We walk a little slower these days and our eyes and hearing are not what they once were. We have worked hard, raised our children, worshiped our God and grown old together. Yes, we are the ones some refer to as being over the hill, and that is probably true. But before writing us off completely, there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration.

In school we studied English, history, math, and science which enabled us to lead America into the technological age. Most of us remember what outhouses were, many of us with firsthand experience. We remember the days of telephone party-lines, 25 cent gasoline, and milk and ice being delivered to our homes. For those of you who don't know what an icebox is, today they are electric and referred to as refrigerators. A few even remember when cars were started with a crank. Yes, we lived those days.

We are probably considered old fashioned and out-dated by many. But there are a few things you need to remember before completely writing us off. We won World War II, fought in Korea and Viet Nam. We can quote The Pledge of Allegiance, and know where to place our hand while doing so. We wore the uniform of our country with pride and lost many friends on the battlefield. We didn't fight for the Socialist States of America , we fought for the "Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave." We wore different uniforms but carried the same flag. We know the words to the Star Spangled Banner, America, and America the Beautiful by heart, and you may even see some tears running down our cheeks as we sing. We have lived what many of you have only read about in history books and we feel no obligation to apologize to anyone for America.

Yes, we are old and slow these days but rest assured, we have at least one good fight left in us. We have loved this country, fought for it, and died for it, and now we are going to save it. It is our country and nobody is going to take it away from us. We took oaths to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that is an oath we plan to keep. There are those who want to destroy this land we love but, like our founders, there is no way we are going to remain silent.

It was mostly the young people of this nation who elected Obama and the Democratic Congress. You fell for the "Hope and Change" which in reality was nothing but "Hype and Lies." You have tasted socialism and seen evil face to face, and have found you don't like it after all. You make a lot of noise, but most are all too interested in their careers or "Climbing the Social Ladder" to be involved in such mundane things as patriotism and voting. Many of those who fell for the "Great Lie" in 2008 are now having buyer's remorse. With all the education we gave you, you didn't have sense enough to see through the lies and instead drank the 'Kool-Aid.' Now you're paying the price and complaining about it. No jobs, lost mortgages, higher taxes, and less freedom. This is what you voted for and this is what you got. We entrusted you with the Torch of Liberty and you traded it for a paycheck and a fancy house.

Well, don't worry youngsters, the Grey-Haired Brigade is here, and in 2012 we are going to take back our nation. We may drive a little slower than you would like but we get where we're going, and in 2012 we're going to the polls by the millions. This land does not belong to the man in the Gold House nor to the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. It belongs to "We the People" and "We the People" plan to reclaim our land and our freedom. We hope this time you will do a better job of preserving it and passing it along to our grandchildren. So the next time you have the chance to say the Pledge of Allegiance, Stand up, put your hand over your heart, honor our country, and thank God for the old geezers of the "Grey-Haired Brigade."

Several years ago, I saw this video on YouTube and, sentimental old geezer that I am, I was moved. I showed it to my young sons, who were in some ways like the kids in the video, preoccupied with their Game-Boys and I-Pods. When it was over, I glared at them with piercing eyes and told them straight out:

"I FOUGHT FOR YOU!"

I was most heartened to see that they responded as I had hoped they would – they have been asking me about the Vietnam War, our present war, and our Nation and what it means.

I am more convinced than ever that we need to take a much larger role in forming the character of our children – it is much more important than whether we are professional successes or "get along" with our neighbors or anyone else. They are our legacy, and their world is under heavy attack from the forces of evil.
