CAIRO (KABC) -- Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi is reportedly under house arrest after the military ultimatum expired Wednesday, reports Al Hayat TV.
Morsi's spokesman denied the report, according to ABC News, but word of the house arrest provoked cheers in Tahrir Square.
This comes as Egypt's military moved to tighten its control on key institutions before their afternoon ultimatum expired.
The military stationed officers in the newsroom of state television on the banks of the Nile River in central Cairo. Troops were deployed in news-production areas.
Officers from the army's media department moved inside the newsroom and were monitoring output, though not yet interfering, staffers said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the arrangements.
This move shows the military's preparation for an almost certain push to remove the country's Islamist president when an afternoon ultimatum expires.
Earlier Wednesday, Egyptian leaders met with the army chief. This meeting also signaled the military was taking concrete moves toward implementing its plan to replace Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected leader who came to office a year ago.
The clock is ticking and no one is really sure exactly what will happen when the deadline is reached. It was imposed by Egypt's military Tuesday after massive demonstrations in the nation's capitol and it will be reached at 7 a.m. - 8 a.m. PT.
Under a plan leaked to state media, the military would install a new interim leadership, the Islamist-backed constitution suspended and the Islamist-dominated parliament dissolved.

I’m glad to see the Egyptian people and military rising up against a tyrannical terrorist government.
I wonder if the NEXT government WON'T be tyrannical and terrorist. I can only hope. My husband and I lived in Saudi Arabia for five years and I went to Egypt twice because it was such a WONderful country. It is so sad. I wish them all peace and prosperity.

The Egyptians probably treat their Christian brothers badly because the Christians have a strong work ethic and therefore OWN homes, businesses, buildings, etc. The hard working Japanese in Hawaii are, I am told, resented by the locals because they OWN so much of Hawaii.
The Indians who immigrated to east Africa were greatly resented by the locals because the Indians WORKED so hard and ended up OWNING much of Nairobi, etc.

The Copts are the native Christians of Egypt, a major ethnoreligious group in Egypt and the largest Christian group there. Christianity was the religion of the vast majority from 400–800 A.D. and the majority after the Muslim conquest until the mid-10th century and remains the faith of a significant minority population. Historically they spoke the Coptic language, a direct descendant of the Demotic (daily, every, common) Egyptian spoken in the Roman era, but it has been near-extinct and mostly limited to liturgical use since the 18th century. Observation: When the ROMAN Catholic Church insisted on Latin as the language of the Mass, it drove away Greeks, Egyptians, etc. Then in 1962 the Pope allowed the VERNACULAR in all countries for the Mass.
That allowance TOOK AWAY the reason for breaking away from the Latin-centered Church. Most of those break-away Catholic communities reunited with Rome.
I was in Serbia this past month and went to Mass. The ONLY word I understood was "Jesus." Otherwise it was the EXACT same Mass as I hear in the USA. I could follow what they did, not what they said. :o)

Cairo has a quarter of the country's population. It is The City, The Capitol and The Center of Egyptian life. It also has SPRAWL, Los Angeles style...kind of a mess.
It reminded me of Mexico City sprawling out over the Valley of Mexico. URBAN SPRAWL.

However, I don't wish a civil war on ANY country. From our own history I know how dreadful this is. I doubt if anyone from the north OR south saw much to amuse.
Civil war is a NO-WIN for all, even the Generalissimo. He will be expected to deliver. He can't deliver what the country doesn't have or produce.
The USA goverment gave HALF of ALL its foreign aid to Egypt 20 years ago. I wonder what we give now.

I admire the people of Egypt for actually caring enough about their country to go out and DO something about it. We can learn from them. What Morsi has done to Egypt pales in comparison to what 0bama has done to America (AND EGYPT).
Behind the curtain, concealed from view, are the money men, the business community. They have strong strings and are pulling them to make things move.
They are setting up a ruling group, a board of directors with an officer as chairman. The strength on the board will control future direction

That is absolutely false. It wasn't the use of Latin that drove away the Easterners from Rome. It was primarily a combination of doctrinal differences that had developed between the East and the West over time and the influence of regional politics.
The Eastern Catholic Churches have always been able to say mass in the language of their own rites according to the norms of their own liturgical laws. They did not have to say mass in Latin before Vatican II. In fact, the Eastern Catholics (those people whom you call the Greeks and Egyptians) had been saying mass in their respective liturgical languages for hundreds of years.
It was the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church that had to conduct it's business in Latin before Vatican II. The change to the Vernacular did not affect the entire Catholic Church only members of the Latin Rites. The other Eastern Rite Churches were already using languages such as Koine Greek, Coptic, and other Vernacular languages in the liturgy long before the 1960s. These Churches were in complete union with the pope, hundreds of years before the suppression of liturgical Latin in the West. Indeed, the introduction of the vernacular into the Western Rites brought no sui juris churches back into union with Rome.
In fact, the Changes to the mass actually probably hurt ecumenism with the Orthodox, because the Orthodox are adverse to tampering with an ancient liturgy. (Contrary to popular perception, the Latin mass wasn't just translated into the vernacular. If it had only been translated, then there wouldn't have been so much controversy surrounding the changes. Instead, the mass was almost completely, and inorganically constructed by a committee, a fact lamented by Benedict XVI. Entire parts of the mass were altered, composed on the spot, cut out, or added into the mass. Consequently, the old mass has much more in common with the Orthodox Divine Liturgy than the new vernacular mass of the Roman Rite does.) A few years back, Alexei II, the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, the largest of the Orthodox Churches, praised the reintroduction of the Latin Mass by Benedict XVI as a move bringing the Catholic Church closer to the Orthodox sensibilities of tradition:

Agreed. However Egypt has a distict geographic advantage in that the great bulk of their population is in the Cairo/Heliopolis area. A big protest involving millions can be organized in just hours, whereas the US is a big spread out country with many metropolitan centers with the associated logistical problems of organizing an event of this magnitude
