Live Thread: Egypt Revolution 2.0
Various sources | Wednesday, July 3, 2013 | Kristinn

Posted on 07/03/2013 5:56:34 AM PDT by kristinn

The Egyptian army has set a deadline of 4 p.m. Cairo time for the Muslim Brotherhood government of President Morsi to compromise with the people of Egypt (by stepping down.) Morsi refuses. 18 people were killed and 200 were wounded in clashes at Cairo University last night.

A Washington Post report from Cairo on dueling statements from Morsi and the army:

Waving his hands and shaking his fists in a 45-minute speech on national television late Tuesday, Morsi swore that he was committed to the democratic process that brought him to power and said that any attempts to subvert the constitution were “unacceptable.”

The army, in turn, posted a message to its Facebook page saying: “We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool.”

In his speech, Morsi acknowledged that he had made mistakes during his year in office as Egypt’s first democratically elected president. But he appealed to Egyptians to give him more time to deal with the country’s problems.

Well said.

“We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool.”

One correction: the last word, “fool” is not the correct translation, it’s “ignorant or ignoramus.”

The significance is that Egyptians call the MB what they really are; sixth century “ignoramuses.”

An army statement that descriptive is very telling. In other cases they would have said “enemies of the state” type of cliché.

Thanks for this thread and all of the coverage! US media is in a virtual blackout on all of this.

Right on the money my friend!

Yes, Carter destroyed 30 years of US influence in Persia.
He did massive damage to US interests in only 4 years.

Obama in 6 years has been given a mandate to unravel all US gains since 1945. This is serious stuff. Egypt was the USA’s kingpin in the Middle East, (even though secretly it is Israel but can't say it publicly) and now, that is virtually gone.

When the last revolution happened, I overheard two older liberal ladies talking and one said “The only way America will CHANGE, advance and progress is when the young take over just like what is happening in Egypt now.” Was she incorrect?

It's the economy. One of the supposedly compelling arguments to letting the Islamics into power was that they'd cause a rainstorm of cash to start falling from the oil rich nations, ending poverty and creating a jobs boom.

A rainstorm of cash did fall - from government reserves and with more than ten billion dollars in loans, and today, in many parts of Egypt, you don't dare plug in a computer without a fully charged backup battery, you have half a bedroom filled with water bottles to get through the next water outage, and you hope that you can get in good with the Islamics if you want to get a job.

Utter poverty has grown by more than 20% under Morsi, with half the country now living on $2 a day. Gas shortages are common, food shortages are becoming more common, and every day the Islamics find another part of Egyptian society to condemn and strike down.

Morsi promised redistribution of wealth, jobs, less poverty and strong Islamic law. What the people have seen is the Brotherhood looting the treasury, giving themselves all the jobs, lifting themselves out of poverty, and an ever shifting Islamic law, and of course, tourism has cratered.

In other words, in a year, Morsi has managed to turn Egypt into the Palestinian Authority.

The Egyptians and Israelis aren't even looking over their shoulders to see what Obama thinks or wants them to do. They know that he is an empty suit not to be relied on for anything, so it is good to see them cooperating for their greater good. You think John Kerry has a grip on the realities there? certainly not. Go Egypt, Go Israel spurn Obama.

They are surely anti-USA.

One reason for that is Obama’s support for installing Morsi. However, a lot of the street signs seem to be directed at Obama perfidy, rather than specifically at the USA.

Kerry’s Secret Gift to Egypt
Jun 6, 2013 4:21 PM EDT

Last month John Kerry quietly approved huge arms shipments to Egypt—despite Cairo’s ongoing violation of human rights. Josh Rogin reports.

While employees of American NGOs sat in Egyptian prisons, Secretary of State John Kerry quietly waived the law that would prevent the U.S. from sending the Egyptian military $1.3 billion worth of weapons this year.

There was this report last year. According to the Russia Times it was revealed as a hoax (hacked twitter account):

http://rt.com/news/egypt-destroy-pyramids-islamists-007/

However, you’ll notice that the supposed tweet came from a Salafi cleric. The Salafist movement is Wahabbi in nature within the Sunni branch of Islam. MB is Sunni. So I’m thinking that the Egyptian Army does not want this virulent strain of Salafism leading the country.

Personally, I think it goes back to Dinesh D’Souza’s documentary 2016: Obama’s America. Obama is a first-world “president” with a third-world view. He wants to establish “parity” between the United States and the rest of the world. In his mind, a Pan-Arab “caliphate” does just that and he’s using the MB to do it.
