Channel 4 is to broadcast the Muslim call to prayer during Ramadan this year, it revealed yesterday. Starting next week, the broadcaster will transmit the morning call to prayer daily for the 30 days of Ramadan.
It is believed to be the first time a mainstream British television channel has broadcast the Islamic call to prayer.
Channel 4’s head of factual programming Ralph Lee said almost five per cent of the British population would ‘actively engage’ in Ramadan this month, adding: ‘Can we say the same of other national events that have received blanket coverage on television such as the Queen’s coronation anniversary?’

When was the last time that channel 4 held a Catholic Mass? And nope not including funerals or weddings that they may broadcast. I am talking regular weekly Sunday Mass.

CH4 since its inception in 1982, has always done ‘alternative’ programming as an alternative to the BBC and ITV monoliths: an alternative Queen’s Christmas Message usually by a charity or political activist or comedian, ethnic programming, gay programming, disabled programming, niche sports.
This Ramadan programming (the first they have ever done btw) needs to be seen in that context, rather than the Brits caving to the Muzzies. If you know CH4’s history, this is just another bit of ethnic programming.
