2 Arrested in Canadian Terror Plot 'inspired by al Qaeda ideology'
THE LONG WAR JOURNAL ^ | July 2, 2013 | by David Barnett

SNIPPET: "Today the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced the arrest of two Canadian-born citizens, John Stuart Nuttall and Amanda Marie Korody, in a terror plot targeting a public gathering at the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria on Canada Day, July 1.

According to online court records, Nuttall and Korody appeared at the Surrey Provincial Court this morning. The two suspects face charges that include "conspiring to place an explosive in or against a place of public use, a government or public facility, with the intent to cause death or serious bodily injury, for the benefit of, at the direction or in association with a terrorist group," according to an RCMP press release.

According to Canadian officials, the investigation into Nuttall and Korody began in February 2013 following a tip from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said in a prepared statement that although Nuttall and Korody were "inspired by Al Qaeda ideology," it was "a domestic threat, without international linkages." Additionally, officials said that there was no evidence that Nuttall and Korody had support from or were acting at the direction of a specific terrorist group.

Both Nuttal and Korody had engaged in "self-radicaliz[ing] behavior," according to authorities. In addition, the two "discussed a wide variety of targets and techniques" prior to their arrest.

Assistant Commissioner Wayne Rideout said Nuttall and Korody's "self-radicalized behaviour was intended to create maximum impact and harm to Canadian citizens at the BC Legislature on a National holiday. They took steps to educate themselves and produced explosive devices designed to cause injury and death.""

RCMP Arrests Two Individuals for Terrorism-related Charges
B.C.
2013-07-02 10:11 PDT

Statements

A/Commr. James Malizia
A/Commr. Wayne Rideout

On July 1st, the RCMP arrested two individuals and charged them with conspiring to carry out a terrorist attack. The two accused John Stuart Nuttall and Amanda Korody, who live in Surrey, British Columbia, took steps to build explosive devices and place them at the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria where crowds were expected to gather on Canada Day.

Charges against these individuals include conspiring to place an explosive in or against a place of public use, a government or public facility, with the intent to cause death or serious bodily injury, for the benefit of, at the direction or in association with a terrorist group. They have been charged under Sections 431.2(2), 83.19 and 81(1)(d) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

I want to reassure our citizens that at all times during the investigation, our primary focus was the safety and protection of the public. While the RCMP believes this threat was real, at no time was the security of the public at risk, stated Assistant Commissioner James Malizia, responsible for Federal Policing Operations. These arrests are another example of the effectiveness of our Integrated National Security Enforcement Team who worked tenaciously to prevent this plan from being carried out.

The RCMP investigation named Project SOUVENIR, was coordinated by the RCMP-led Integrated National Security Enforcement Teams (INSET) in British Columbia and initiated with information from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. The RCMP would like to thank its INSET partners in British Columbia for their tremendous support throughout this investigation.

It is very important that Canadians remain vigilant, added Assistant Commissioner Malizia. We encourage the active engagement of all our citizens in protecting Canada’s national security as it is a shared responsibility.

The public is always urged to bring any suspicious activities to the RCMP’s attention through the National Security Information Network (1-800-420-5805) or by contacting the police in their community.

Comments from Assistant Commissioner James Malizia

Good afternoon and thank you all for being here.

On July 1st, the RCMP arrested and charged John Stuart Nuttall and Amanda Korody for terrorism-related activities, including taking steps to build and subsequently place explosive devices at a pre-determined public location in the City of Victoria in British Columbia for the purpose of causing death or serious bodily injuries on Canada Day.

These charges are the result of an RCMP investigation named project SOUVENIR, which was launched in February 2013 based on information received from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

These individuals were inspired by Al Qaeda ideology. Our investigation demonstrated that this was a domestic threat, without international linkages.

I want to reassure our citizens that at all times during the investigation, our primary focus was the safety and protection of the public. While the RCMP believes this threat was real, at no time was the security of the public at risk.

These arrests are another example of the effectiveness of our Integrated National Security Enforcement Team who worked tenaciously to prevent this plan from being carried out. We detected the threat early and disrupted it. On behalf of the RCMP, I want to express our appreciation to CSIS and all our partners for their tremendous support throughout this investigation. I also want to express my gratitude to everyone who worked tirelessly on this case for their commitment, expertise and dedication.

It is very important that Canadians remain vigilant. We encourage the active engagement of all of our citizens in protecting Canada’s national security as this is a shared responsibility. We urge the public to bring any suspicious activities to the RCMP’s attention through our National Security Information Network (1-800-420-5805) or by contacting the police in their communities.

I would now invite Assistant Commissioner Wayne Rideout to share some of the details of the investigation.

Comments from Assistant Commissioner Wayne Rideout

This has been a priority investigation for the RCMP that included a number of partnerships who all place public safety first and foremost.

INSET’s mandate is to detect, deter and dismantle terrorist activities. John NUTTALL and Amanda KORODY, who are both Canadian-born citizens have been charged with the following:

Count 1: John NUTTALL and Amanda KORODY did conspire to place an explosive in or against a place of public use, a government or public facility, with intent to cause death or serious bodily injury; in connection to terrorism.

Count 2: John NUTTALL and Amanda KORODY did knowingly facilitate a terrorist activity,

Count 3: John NUTTALL and Amanda KORODY did make or have in their possession an explosive substance with intent to endanger life or cause serious damage to property.

This self-radicalized behaviour was intended to create maximum impact and harm to Canadian citizens at the BC Legislature on a National holiday. They took steps to educate themselves and produced explosive devices designed to cause injury and death.

The RCMP deployed significant resources over the past five months.

The suspects were committed to acts of violence and discussed a wide variety of targets and techniques.

In order to ensure public safety, we employed a variety of complex investigative and covert techniques to control any opportunity the suspects had to commit harm.

These devices were completely under our control, they were inert, and at no time represented a threat to public safety.

We all agree that crimes of this nature are not acceptable as they work to destroy the very foundation to a safe and peaceful society. While these charges are shocking, they are still rare. Nevertheless, that doesn’t remove the need to remain vigilant and we are out there to ensure nothing happens to Canadians.

We would also like to recognize our community partners. We have worked hard over the years to strengthen and build our relationships with various citizen and community groups. We have met with a number of leaders this morning and provided them with an update and truly appreciate their support.

I am mindful that charges are currently before the courts. As a result, there are a series of details I cannot discuss in order to ensure a successful prosecution.

“Details emerge on couple behind Canada terror plot”

SNIPPET: “Morino also revealed that Nuttall, born in 1974, is a “convert to Islam,” according to the Associated Press. Although Morino did not know if Korody, born in 1983, had also converted, the Toronto Star reported that “[a]n acquaintance of Korody’s from high school said she believed Korody converted to Islam about three years ago.” When Nuttall and Korody first moved into the basement dwelling “he was not a practising Muslim, but converted to Islam about two years ago,” the Vancouver Sun reported.”

SNIPPET: “Morino said that he was “not aware of any mosque with which he [Nuttall] is affiliated,” but according to the Vancouver Sun the suspects’ landlady said the couple “visited a local mosque and listened to radical Islamist tapes in their basement suite.” Korody would wear a burkah to the mosque, the landlady said.

Neighbors have said that Nuttall and Korody “wore traditional Muslim clothes or camouflage” and were [v]ery into guns and paintball,” a reporter for CKNW News Talk 980 in Vancouver tweeted on Tuesday evening. Additionally, one neighbor reportedly called the police once when Nuttall was “wandering up and down the street in the middle of the night, like two o’ clock in the morning, yelling into his cell phone about blowing things up ... talking about Canadian Forces and Islam right now and if this person on the phone didn’t give him the answers he wanted he was prepared to do whatever he had to do to get to the afterlife,” the neighbor said. Stefano Pasta, who previously played in a band with Nuttal, described him as “opinionated and political,” according to the CBC.

Nuttall is known to have a criminal history dating back to at least 1997, according to online court records.”

SNIPPET: “Both Nuttall and Korody will next appear in court on July 9.”

SNIPPET: ““I live in Surrey BC Vancouver, I will meet you on the corner of 99th and 120th on the train tracks. I cant wait to meet you kafir. I am a Mujahid and inshAllah I will die a Shaheed!” The posting gives a phone number known to belong to Mr. Nuttall, and instructs the caller to ask for “John.”

The posting was made under the user name “Ana Nimity,” an apparent reference to the name Ms. Korody was better known by, Ana.

YouTube posts made under the same name in October, 2012...”

SNIPPET: “In March, 2013, posts under the “Ana Nimity” name appear under videos pushing Israel conspiracy theories.”

SNIPPET: “Yet a few months before the angry postings begin, both Mr. Nuttall and Ms. Korody were posting regularly in a Vancouver-area paintball forum, often asking for advice and rides out to a playing field. Mr. Nuttall posted under the name “Mujahid,” while Ms. Korody used “PirateNinjaCat.””
