Egypt rivals take to streets ahead of Morsi deadline

Opponents and supporters of Egypt's president have gathered in the capital, Cairo, as the deadline set by a protest group for him to leave power passed.

Tamarod (Rebel) had given Mohammed Morsi until 17:00 (15:00 GMT) to resign or face a civil disobedience campaign.

The ultimatum was issued on Monday, hours before the military itself warned it would intervene unless he reached an agreement with the opposition.

Mr Morsi criticised the statement, saying it "might cause confusion".

The president met the head of the armed forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, for the second day in a row on Tuesday. They did not give any details of the talks, which also included Prime Minister Hisham Qandil.

Mr Morsi was put under further pressure by the resignation of six ministers from his government on Monday, including Foreign Minister Kamel Amr.

On Tuesday, the spokesmen for the presidency and the cabinet were also reported to have quit.

******
There’s nothing confusing about an ultimatum. Unless you’re a tyrant.

So, you have many millions of Egyptians telling Morsi he has to step down. And you have the military telling him to either come to an agreement with the opposition, or else.

The military is most likely to ultimately adopt measures similar to Mubarrack. The opposition is most likely to adopt something that is more secular and democratic.

Either would be much, much better for U.S. interests than the Muslim Brotherhood's Fundamental Islam and Sharia LAw.

But, our President is all in with Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood. Soon, Obamastan is going to either have to abadnon Morsi...or try and prop him up with US support...which would cause a very bloody civil war there, and would involve our own troops on the wrong side of the fight.

Sounds perfect from President You Didn't Build That's perspective: maximum disruption for Egypt, plus an opportunity to make the U.S. look worse than ever.

And actually may just be his undoing. Let's only pray he makes that blunder, and it can be stopped before it ever gets started.

So far I have heard nothing from President Bystander except that sexual assault is not a good way to protest.

How would those better connected than I am characterize American media coverage - specifically the cable and msm networks?

I saw a report day before yesterday indicating that we had already sent 400 U.S> Marines in to help augment Morsi’s security detail.

There was a 24 hr deadline from the Tamrod - that has passed. And a 48 hr from the Army - clock still ticking on that one.

Morsi will soon learn what everyone else knows: the great Bammy is harmless as an enemy and treacherous as a friend.

Quote from linked article:

“With this action, the Obama Administration reinforces the Muslim Brotherhood even as it steps up its blasphemy prosecutions against Egypt’s Christians and even as Egypt’s president appointed an actual terrorist leader as governor of an important region,” Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow with the American Center for Law and Justice said in an e-mail blasting the new $1.3 billion “cash stimulus” for the Muslim Brotherhood supplied by Secretary of State John Kerry. “Speak up. Tell the Administration, tell Congress, there should be no taxpayer money for jihad.”
