How Immigration Reform Can Pass
New York Magazine ^ | 6/27/13 | Jonathan Chait

Posted on 07/01/2013 8:02:56 PM PDT by fifedom

John Boehner has promised conservatives he won't let any bill lacking support from most Republicans come to a vote. There's a way around this problem: the discharge petition. If 218 members of the House sign one, then it automatically comes to the House floor for a vote. Democrats only have 201 votes, so they'd need seventeen Republicans to join them, plus one for every Democrat who defects. If Boehner wants the bill to pass, he wouldn't want to punish the handful of Republicans who sign a petition.

Might work. Why would the amnesty traitors in the Senate vote for a bill they thought would be killed in the House. Are they stupid or suicidal? Well, they are stupid but definitely not suicidal. Boner wants to see amnesty happen and this is a way for him to do it while giving him enough deniablity with the uninformed to stay in office. The Chamber of Commerce and Mark Zuckerberg have probably promised cushy jobs to any of the traitors IF the amnesty happens.

Yes, finding 17 traitors in the U.S. House among the GOP segment should be as easy as cutting a cake.

I don't particularly trust Boehner, but why would you think Jonathan Chait, liberal journolista hero, would ever say anything remotely like the truth?

RE :”But John Boehner has promised conservatives he won't let any bill lacking support from most Republicans come to a vote — which, if kept, would doom immigration reform. That's what everybody, including me, has been saying.
But it's not completely true.
There's a way around this problem: the discharge petition. If 218 members of the House sign one, then it automatically comes to the House floor for a vote. Last December, Democrats in the House threatened a discharge petition to bring up a Senate bill extending the Bush tax cuts on income under $250,000 a year.
House Democrats would have to do it again with the Senate immigration bill. Democrats only have 201 votes, so they'd need seventeen Republicans to join them, plus one for every Democrat who defects.”

Heard this one on MSNBC. But who will convince the 17 or so to join Dems on this?? It cant be Ryan. This one seems farfetched.

Only chance to stop the Amnesty bill is for the House not to consider any immigration related bill at all.

Michelle Bachman explained it. ANY House bill no matter if it promises all the border security in the world will be a trojan horse.NO bill at all must come out of the House because it will be merged with the Senate Amnesty and trojan horse bill. Call congress.

Tell them to stop all Amnesty or immigration bills.they are all trojan horse bills. some will promise border security that will never be enforced anyway.

Bachmann explained it . The House will write a border security bill only . then in conference the senate will add the virus and then bring it back to the house. then the conservatives won’t vote for it but democrats will all vote for it so then they only need 10% of republicans to pass Amnesty and the virus that will destroy America. so any bill at all will be added the virus . so best thing is for Boner to not let any immigration bill at all come out of the House. that is the only hope . call boner and the members of the House.

Tom Tancredo echos what Michelle Bachmann said.

call congress . no bill at all from the House

If this were to happen, it is the end of the GOP. We will have a third party.

My mother gets the New Yorker. I occasionally leaf thru it when I visit her. I wouldn’t use that rag to wipe my butt if that was the only paper around. It’s pure lies and poison.

I don’t think he’ll do it. Anyone associated with a Discharge would be a dead duck. The dems. are aggressively poaching Republican districts. I wouldn’t consider a single one to be ‘safe’ under these circumstances. Piss your voters off, and incentivize them to stay home. Or vote a third (or fourth) party. While the local democrat Machine collects and counts all of the invalid, illegal, spoiled, deceased, provisional, and otherwise bogus votes. Yeah, Mr. Speaker, that’s the ticket!

I amnot saying I agree with Chait's politics but all he is doing is pointing out a House rule. The rule exists, look it up.

Do you think it would be hard to find 17 amnesty supporters among the House Republicans to join the Rats to pass a discharge petition? I think it would be easy.

You're assuming the Pubbies want to stay in office. But the Chamber of Commerce, Mark Zuckerberg and his Silicon valley billionaires have tone of money riding on this. They can pour huge $$ to help them out in the next election. If they lose, they can find them a "consulting" job for life paying them big money.

The farmers, ranchers, fast food, hotel, etc businesses make $billions from the illegals. Silicon valley also makes huge bucks from the cheap engineers they import from India, China, Russia. Anything they spend on getting amnesty through is peanuts to them.

Blue Slipping is a little known procedure the House can use to kill a bill which originates in the Senate if a Senate bill earmarks appropriations or taxes in its content. It is unconstitutional because that by the Constitution(fund raising or appropriation) is left up to the House. That issue (the $5000 fine to employers who hire Americans over illegals) was brought to the attention to the American people by Texas Senator Ted Cruz by the way. And there might be other “stuff” like it in that 1200 page bill which nobody read.

But it does not necessasarily means the Senate Bill is dead in the water. Once the House sets up its own bill heavy on border security (which the will never be implemented by the executive) both can go back to the Senate and the Senate tosses the questionable provisions out (in”conference”) that bill goes to the executive he signs it and we’re stuck with it.

Frankly If this isn’t stopped dead in the water in the House every Republican that supports this idea deserves and will lose their seat. It’s too a dangerous game they’re playing with this country.

ENOUGH OF THE ONE WORLD SOCIALISM ...BRING BACK SOVEREIGNTY AND SANITY TO OUR COUNTRY .....BRING BACK BELIEF IN GOD ...THIS GOVERNMENT OUT OUR FACE..... OUR RELIGIONS..... AND OUR BEDROOMS..

Chait put it somewhat more delicately:
“there is a lot of pro-immigration
money out there available to support any
Republican facing such a challenge.”

Money doesn’t necessarily buy votes. The slaughter of democrats in 2010 wasn’t because of money.

Hey, I already said I don’t trust Boehner. I’m talking with my rep, I’m going to call and write Boehner too. My rep has heard me loud and clear. WE have to get it through to them that if they abandon the conservative position of no amnesty, that they will split the party. They will have left us, not the other way around. The ball is in our court, call your rep, even if they are leftists, keep pressure on.

You’re dead right on that. Which again begs the question, why does the GOP leadership always stick us in the back. A new conservative party can’t come soon enough.

The vast majority of conservatives I know say that if the House rolls over on amnesty, they are done with the Republican party forever. Now, you may say that these same people will come back and vote GOP. NOT this time! They know amnesty will wreck our country and they are red hot pissed! I have never seen anger as palpable as this. Nothing even comes close.

I agree. “The Fix is in “. The house will appear to have a bill to secure the border. That will go to conference . Amnesty will then be first and then watered down promises of secure borders. Then Boehner will work for a “bipartisan” agreement to pass the bill. He will not have to dump the hastert rule if he secretly backs the discharge petition. Paul RYAN the traitor will be right there to sign up.
