The abortion ban Texas is debating? It already exists in 12 other states.

The Texas Senate will reconvene Monday afternoon to once again take up Senate Bill 5. The measure would, among other things, ban abortion after 20 weeks gestation. While the bill has received nationwide media attention, Texas would not be setting a precedent with its passage. Since 2010, a dozen states have passed similar legislation. You can see them below, in this map:

Nebraska was the first state to pass such legislation in 2010, when it was aiming to push a late-term abortion clinic outside of its state borders. Eleven states have since followed in its footsteps and, if Senate Bill 5 passes, Texas would be the 13th state in the country to do so.

Recent polling suggests that Americans narrowly support banning abortions at 20 weeks, the point in pregnancy that antiabortion advocates say a fetus can experience pain (this claim is disputed). National Journal recently found that 48 percent of Americans agree with these bans, with the highest levels of support coming from Republicans, independents and young people.

We’ve seen several close here in Michigan simply by passing laws requiring licenses and doctors to be present during abortions.

Odd that 58% of blacks oppose an abortion ban at 20 weeks considering these facts:

The fact is that Conservatives are consistently pro-life. It's a moral absolute without exception. If past history is any guide, sure 90% of those 13-million murdered at abortion mills would have grown up to vote for Democrats and Obama. Nevertheless, since Conservatives take the Ten Commandments seriously, pro-life is pro-life even if it doesn't advance political interests. The core values of being pro-God and pro-life are not negotiable for momentary political expediency.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

very interesting that overall, there’s a 4 pt margin in support of the ban and the post describes it that Americans narrowly support it. I wonder if they’ve ever said Obama narrowly defeated Romney, given he had the same 4 pt margin.

Since you two are a heck of lot more politically shrewd than I am, I'll go just ahead and ask what may be a naive question. Could Governor Rick Perry just go ahead an issue an executive order to make this much-needed abortion ban a reality?

Frankly I see no need for the taxpayers to pay a cent for further debate on the matter. Abortion is murder. Period. There's no need for a debate or a vote on that which is self-evident.

Nebraska passed the first 20-week limit, then Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Alabama have followed.

Also Louisiana and North Dakota.

Roe vs Wade established rights of the woman whether we agree with those rights or not. However those rights never applied to the abortion providers. They were always subject to laws and regulations. I don't understand why action wasn't taken to limit them sooner.
