Washington Post releases four new slides from NSA's Prism presentation
Guardian UK ^ | Sunday 30 June 2013 10.59 EDT | Ed Pilkington in New York

The Washington Post has released four previously unpublished slides from the NSA's PowerPoint presentation on Prism, the top-secret programme that collects data on foreign surveillance targets from the systems of nine participating internet companies.

The newly published top-secret documents, which the newspaper has released with some redactions, give further details of how Prism interfaces with the nine companies, which include such giants as Google, Microsoft and Apple. According to annotations to the slides by the Washington Post, the new material shows how the FBI "deploys government equipment on private company property to retrieve matching information from a participating company, such as Microsoft or Yahoo and pass it without further review to the NSA".

We had to burn down the village to save it.

Do the feds and lawmakers sue the information for insider trading in the name of personal gain? Me thinks the government is only looking out for personal, financial and political gain, and not national security

So it’s not a far fetched idea to believe that Microsoft would install a “Back Door” during one of their security updates so the NSA has direct access to our computers.

The new charts show both the details of the Prism system and the authorization process. Snowden has not talked much about either of these. But he has, for example, inferred that any Analyst has free reign to browse the collected data. The charts say NO to that.

Now it is certainly possible, some would say likely, that the Analysts get rubber stamp approval to do their browsing. I suspect not. Others will disagree.

But the chart tells us that there is a review and approval process in place at NSA and, if you look closely, at the FBI. In the case of the FBI there is the notation: “Research and Validate no USPERs” which would mean, I assume, that the FBI needs to insure that No U.S. Persons are being looked at for the request in question.

Is the system honored? As Hamlet would remind us, that is the question.

FWIW.

.... Hmmmmm ..... In order to secure and protect our freedom we somehow decided that the best way to do this was to ..... give up our freedom in exchange for security and protection.

Yup ...... makes sense to me ...... NOT

I find the idea of top-secret Powerpoint presentations hilarious.

Snowden outright stated that getting approval was banally easy - about 5% of all requests received any scrutiny at all.

He said this early on.

I wonder if everyone’s activities is truly captured&monitored by the NSA or other agnecies.. IF so, her records would be worth review..

What a stunning record of protecting embassies in Africa during her service under Bubba...

and what about her cell records about the time the Benghazi talking points blew up would be interesting to, imo.

Can you hear me now, Holder? HOLDER???

talk about clinton retreads.

You think Ben FRanklin would have signed off on this program?

He enjoyed a good party and a drink or two... or so I read somewhere

amazing how you can have the best fishing net in the world, but then how to get a big fish to jump in it.. ya starve.. or eat a lot of little ones..

funny how the Boston Bombers swam thru the net repeatedly.. not a peep, ‘til .. well, at least we had the records for that, a lot of good it did..

Time for a bunker upgrade .. double layered tinfoil hatch coming up.. with a lead lined 2-seater portoilet.

The stink is in the wind.. and our flag is flying in it..

Giddyup!

Yes he did. Do we believe him? That's my problem. A lot of what he said is certainly not true. And some of what he has told us is true. Very hard to tell which is which.

People cringe when they see parallels drawn between the 30s and now..

Those who have studied history know full well how slippery the slope is between a full blown tyranny and a government of sane and decent people.

God help US All!!

I am 100% certain the answer is NO. The Power at their fingertips is so tempting for any leftist.

Leftist are absolute control freaks -- the power of the NSA data at the fingertips of Obama's top true believers is too powerful to not use.

I would gather that early on in his first term a secret access point to the NSA data was put in place, just for use by his top political operatives.

It appears to me that there is significantly less interest in the Snowden case here on FR than there was early on as evidenced by the weak response to your very important post. The new charts tell us much more than the original set and should be reviewed by interested Freepers, particularly by those who post to your thread.

In contrast, the DU thread on this subject is getting a lot of attention and some surprisingly (for the DU) interesting comments.

I'm assuming it is OK to link to DU but I could be wrong. If so Admin should delete this post. In any case, here is the DU link:
