SANTA FE (KRQE) - Santa Fe will not limit how big gun magazines can be.
The decision comes after a plan to ban on high capacity automatic gun ammunition magazines was shot down at a packed city hall meeting Wednesday night.
"The state constitution is very clear that in no way can it be regulated by anybody,” Thomas Iddings said. “But it's not the magazines that are the problem. It's criminals."
"I don't think it's a constitutional issue,” Paul Schmitt said. “I think it's an inconvenience that people have to change their magazines. We're not limiting weaponry."
If it had passed, the ban would have allowed people to keep magazines that carry more than 10 bullets if they already own them, but not buy anymore in the city.
Counselors voted the plan down six to two.
The police chief said it would have been tough to enforce.
The mayor reiterated his support for the bill and his disappointment at the council's vote.
Bloomberg can throw another hissy-fit. Thanks to all of those good citizens who showed for the council meeting, sent emails, and made calls. People speaking against the ban outnumbered supporters 2:1.

I agree. When I was there, it’s like I was back in L.A., but in a desert environment. Too lib for my taste.
We have many city governments packed with low information Kings and Queens.
From the Santa Fe website: Mayor Coss holds a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science from New Mexico State University and a master’s degree in Zoology from Southern Illinois University. After completing his master’s degree, Mayor Coss worked as a surface water scientist for the state of New Mexico. During this time, he became active in his union and worked to create the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and became Director of the Environmental Protection Division within NMED.
In 1995, Mayor Coss became Santa Fe's Public Works director, where he was instrumental in creating the Santa Fe River Masterplan and worked on the river restoration between St. Francis Drive and Camino Alire.
As City Councilor, Mayor Coss co-sponsored Santa Fe’s Living Wage Ordinance, a landmark law which has drawn national and international recognition. He also co-sponsored the Neighborhood Bill of Rights, which empowers local residents to maintain the integrity of their neighborhoods; and Santa Fe Homes, requiring all new developments built within the city to include 30% affordable housing.

Santa Fe is as wacky as it gets. Being in LA, you could survive there, though.

I could be wrong, but don’t expect dramatic changes in Santa Fe. There are still good folk there, but the growing rich import community by-and-large can afford to be stupid and fiddle while state and country burns. They celebrate the Obamination while they drive around in Jaguars and live in $2 million houses. Santa Fe is one of the few cities in the 4 corners where you see Southeby’s real estate signs.
Thankfully - he is not running for mayor again - but has his eye on the House of “Representatives.” Unfortunately, his co-conspirator on this bill has already declared that “she” will run for mayor.
Well this is good news. I try to stay in my neck of the woods and out of Santa Fe, but it can’t always be avoided. I like to throw my pistol into the center console, and I don’t have any low capacity magazines for it.
My big beef with Santa Fe is that it has big city prices with hick town wages. The artsy fartsy liberals and CA imports, along with the Eastern imports brought all the high prices of real estate and living, but they didn’t bring wages that allow the peons to survive while working for them.
Then again, it’s been about 15 years since I actually had to work and spend time in Santa Fe, so things might have changed.
