Santa Fe votes down gun magazine ban

SANTA FE (KRQE) - Santa Fe will not limit how big gun magazines can be.

The decision comes after a plan to ban on high capacity automatic gun ammunition magazines was shot down at a packed city hall meeting Wednesday night.

"The state constitution is very clear that in no way can it be regulated by anybody,” Thomas Iddings said. “But it's not the magazines that are the problem. It's criminals."

"I don't think it's a constitutional issue,” Paul Schmitt said. “I think it's an inconvenience that people have to change their magazines. We're not limiting weaponry."

If it had passed, the ban would have allowed people to keep magazines that carry more than 10 bullets if they already own them, but not buy anymore in the city.

Counselors voted the plan down six to two.

The police chief said it would have been tough to enforce.

The mayor reiterated his support for the bill and his disappointment at the council's vote.

Sante Fe leans prettyleft this is surprising.

Gun rights are not entirely a right vs left issue anymore.

“Santa Fe is wacko because of all the artsy-fartsy imports from NY and CA. They are utterly detached from reality.”

Not unlike Austin, TX, Madison, WI, Sacramento, CA, Las Vegas, NV , you pick the city. These places all have a disproportionate influence on the states in which they are located. In places like New Mexico, it’s just more pronounced because it is more isolated.

“BTW, there are some conservative movie people in SF.”

Oh, yeah. One of my closest friends in the biz lives near Castro, and just heads to L.A. if he has some projects for the Travel Channel as an exec producer. Our agreement is that he won’t criticize me for living close to W Hollywood aka Fagtown and I won’t get on him for living near Castro.

You folks in Santa Fe had best be taking names——take those two yes votes and make their lives miserable. Running them out of town would be a nice touch. Keeping them as tokens is not productive because, as has been noted, you can’t fix STUPID.

The Barry and Bloomers gun Nazis are in BIG trouble if Santa Fe feels this way.

I was pleasantly surprised; I always thought Santa Fe was Dem country but apparently there’s still enough free spirits and independent thinkers there.

A reminder that a former two-term (republican)governor, Gary Johnson, ran for president during the last election and did very well on the Libertarian ticket. Watch for him in the next election.

From what little I know about Gary Johnson I like him . . . I’d like to see a powerful and credible libertarian ticket (Rand Paul/Gary Johnson?) win the White House with a 34 percent vote in 2016. The Dems and the GOP are the same party with different names.
