Texas Abortion Filibuster Halted
Politico ^ | 6/26/2013

Posted on 06/25/2013 10:05:19 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Texas’ lieutenant governor late Tuesday suspended a senator’s filibuster against wide-ranging abortion restrictions, but Democrats moved quickly to appeal the decision and set off a parliamentary fight over the rules.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst after determining that Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis strayed off the topic when she talked about a sonogram bill passed in 2011 and how the new abortion restrictions only compounded the anti-abortion laws in Texas.

As a strategic matter, I think they would have been better to let her go on with her filibuster. Eventually, they are going to vote on it, and they either have the votes or they don't. Stopping her on a technicality could just create some cause celebre about how unfair it was.

It’s a scary time for the pro-life movement. The Supreme Court could be set to deal it a horrible blow tomorrow.

Not as unfair as leaving the state so the voting body would not have a quorum.

Process matters. Doing it the way it was done could in the long run hurt. I watched this debacle on you tube. Watch the process stories tomorrow. I promise there is not much to be proud of. They should have let her go call a second session and pass the bill. This way is too polarizing Nd will gin up the left for money and candidates when demographically TX is already falling fast.

Eventually, they are going to vote on it, and they either have the votes or they don't. Stopping her on a technicality could just create some cause celebre about how unfair it was.

It's a special session of the legislature with a specific termination date: midnight, tonight.

If she had dragged it out until midnight, no more business could've been transacted.

After all the drama and BS, keep one thing in mind when we hear how the Texas proposal is some extremist position. Abortion law in leftist, socialist, feminist Sweden is far more strict than the anything being considered for Texas.

In Sweden;
“The current legislation is the Abortion Act of 1974 (SFS 1974:595). This states that up until the end of the eighteenth week of the pregnancy the choice of an abortion is entirely up to the woman, for any reason whatsoever. After the 18th a woman needs a permission from the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) to have an abortion. Permission for these late abortions is usually granted for cases in which the fetus or mother are unhealthy. Abortion is not allowed if the fetus is viable, which generally means that abortions after the 22nd week are not allowed. However, abortions after the 22nd week may be allowed in the rare cases where the fetus can not survive outside the womb even if it is carried to term. The issue is largely settled in Sweden and the question of the legality of abortion is not a highly controversial political issue.”

So the American radical left is deeply oppressed by a policy that a Swedish feminist finds satisfactory.

That’s not official out of the Caucus, but the Pro-Aborts outside the Rotunda are hugging, and crying, and happy.

If not for all the shouting, stomping, deafening, ear splitting chaos from the Protestors, the bill would’ve passed.

Isn;t the Sergeant at Arms or somebody supposed to keep order, or have the DPS remove disruptors so that business can be conducted?

I know exactly how the libs in Austin act, after watching a 20 something knock down an 82 year old woman at the State Capitol.

Did the Cops do anything? Arrest him for battery? No, they told him he should leave, and just ignored that he didn't.

FoxNews is reporting that if this bill had passed, that it would close all abortion clinics in Texas.

Any article that explains why it would close all abortion clinics.

Perhaps the answer to my question comes from http://lifenews.com/2013/06/26/texas-bill-to-ban-late-term-abortions-doesnt-pass-2nd-session-likely/

The bill would ban abortions after 20 weeks and hold abortion clinics accountable by making them meet basic health and safety standards that have closed facilities in other states that are unable to comply. Senate Bill 5 also requires all abortion clinics to meet the same health and safety regulations as an ambulatory surgical center, requires a doctor providing abortions to secure admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, and lastly, requires a doctor to personally administer the abortion-inducing drugs to the patient.
