Massachusetts voters elevated a veteran congressman to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, choosing longtime Democratic Rep. Edward J. Markey to fill John F. Kerry’s unexpired term.
With 82% of precincts reporting, Markey held an 8-percentage-point lead over Republican Gabriel Gomez, and the Associated Press declared him the winner. Markey will serve 17 months; the seat will be on the ballot again in November 2014.
The race to replace Kerry, who resigned Feb. 1 to become U.S. secretary of State, began with the lessons of another Massachusetts special election fresh in both parties' minds. But the prospect of another upset fizzled after a campaign in which Democrats left little to chance and Republicans lacked the galvanizing issue that "Obamacare" proved to be in the 2010 race won by Scott Brown.
"The lesson from Scott Brown’s accidental win in 2010 was that Democrats must never take a race for granted," said Guy Cecil, executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. "Democrats came together at the local and national level, and executed a campaign plan to ensure victory."
This election failed to generate much interest. The state’s chief elections officer projected a record low turnout, with just over a third of 4.3 million registered voters expected to cast ballots. That would be more than 600,000 fewer than in the January 2010 special election prompted by the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

I know the people of MA must be as thrilled as they were the night John F. Kerry was first elected in 1984.
Imagine if there had been somebody in the race conservatives could vote for?
Or even somebody Republicans could vote for?

John Adams would have understood how MA would turn out politically. He would have been aghast, but he would have easily predicted the nature of the people there.

We got one critical Mengelecare vote out of Brown (yes, Mengelecare could have been even worse) and that was worth the effort. Brown was a gamble from the beginning, and he quickly exposed himself as a loser. Instead of riding conservative principles to a senate career, Brown ran scared from the Boston Globe and went squishy and - - surprise, surprise - - the people who elected him the first time around stayed home when they saw what an unprincipled coward he was. That wasn't the fault of those who took the gamble.
Look at all the people Rubio has thrown under the bus. A lot of people had high hopes for that assclown, too.
Gomez has said he is “personally pro-life,” but wouldn’t attempt to change abortion law, calling Roe vs. Wade “settled law,” in an interview with the Boston Globe. He accepts exemptions like rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother, but none of that seemed to matter in the face of ads and stump speeches that painted Gomez as an extremist.

I’ve had disdain for Rubio from day one, and it was because of his fingers: you can tell he’s never changed a bicycle chain, cranked a wrench, cleared a brush.. I know it seems shallow but I judge a man by his hands.
Rubio has had someone do everything for him all his life.
