Archbishop Gomez Says Immigration Tests America's Identity

The American dream is at stake in the debate over immigration reform, Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles told a group of journalists, saying the issue provides a chance for the nation to renew its soul.

“Our national debate about immigration is a great struggle for the American spirit and the American soul,” the Mexican-born American citizen said June 21 at the Catholic Media Conference in Denver.

“It’s also a defining historical moment for America, a moment for national renewal.”

He told those who are engaged in media as a “witness of service to the Church” that the need for immigration reform is, he believes, “the most pressing issue that we face in American public life.”

Since the Church in America is one of immigrants, the immigration debate is indeed one “about the future of the Church and our Catholic people,” he said.

Most Latin-American immigrants are Catholic, he noted, adding that members of the faith “need to help our neighbors see that immigration is about more than immigration.”

The vision of the Founding Fathers has caused reform in the areas of slavery, civil rights, farm workers' rights and the pro-life movement.

The recognition of the human dignity of slaves, of people of color, of farm workers and of unborn children should awaken our consciences, enabling us “to open our hearts to the 11 million people who are living here without authorization.”

Instead of having open hearts to admittedly illegal immigrants, Archbishop Gomez said America has been addressing the issue with discrimination, race-based criminal profiling, random identity checks, commando-style raids of workplaces and homes and arbitrary detentions.

It’s not an “immigration” debate. It’s an amnesty debate. We do not reward law breakers!

Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles needs to be run out of the country and sent back to Rome for a replacement. We don’t need a commie bishop.

This time we send these commie turd back alive.

Gomez must be a very young man not to remember having gone through these ridiculous gyrations before. I seem to recall these promises, promises, serious promises about four or five times in my lifetime.

Phooey!

Revising and extending my remarks. Actually, it’s a national defense debate. Do we allow the illegal alien invasion to continue wrecking our economy, eroding our national sovereignty, robbing our national treasury or do we defend our nation, defend our constitutional rights, defend our borders? Defend our very ability to survive as a sovereign nation? No nation can long endure and prosper with millions of illegal aliens flooding uncontrollably across its borders.

Archbishop Gomez is Mexican, through and through. Therein lies his allegiance.

Amnesty will test many American things, including it’s identity, collision airbags, copper wiring, and prison space.

The Catholic Church would love for the US to become yet another failed, Catholic majority or supermajority country, complete with rampant poverty, crime and all the thrilling social problems that the church claims to address, but never seems to actually fix.

This country was founded, in part, to escape the sloth and greed of the Catholic Church and their minions, and now we’re about to learn that allowing the Irish into the US in the 1870’s was the first step down the road to the end of the US.

Fr. Gomez, where is your concern for drug mules, kidnappings, beheadings, gangs, etc. coming from Mexico. Rather than make America a hell, why don’t you GO to Mexico and serve the flock there? Wear a bullet-proof vest as you cross the border. BTW, shame on your pseudo-compassion! Bob

Immigration is about more than immigration. Got that.

The nation needs renewal from within.

Other nations (like MEXICO) need drastic reforms too. Rout out the corruption. Build the infastructure. Promote education. Encourage people to take pride in REBUILDING their country, not conquering ours.

And what about the other 9-19 million who are here without authorization?

Yeah, a Left Wing Mexican Born Church Politician wants us to open the borders and legalize immigration law breakers. That is a huge shocker.
