DETROIT (AP) -- The only two McDonald's restaurants in the United States that were serving food prepared according to Islamic law have stopped several weeks after a $700,000 settlement over a lawsuit that alleged the items weren't consistently halal.

The fast-food giant said in a statement Monday that the locations in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, which has a large Muslim population, are no longer offering a halal McChicken sandwich or Chicken McNuggets in order "to focus on our national core menu."

The corporation added it takes into account "local and dietary preferences," and supports its franchisees in Dearborn. Neither the statement nor a spokeswoman said whether McDonald's decision was related to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, brought by customer Ahmed Ahmed in 2011, technically covered anyone who bought the halal-advertised products between September 2005 and January from the restaurant on Ford Road and another one in Dearborn with a different owner. The second location wasn't a defendant or a focus of the investigation.

Judaism, as the root for all 3 Monotheistic faiths...

Misconception. Allah is not the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. Allah is the Arabian moon god.

Advice can be subverted to dictate, yes.

Any food establishment should not change its menu in a big way just to serve a specific population - on the other hand, business is business.

I do not think a Jew would take MacDonald's word that the food is Kosher. Muslims might, not sure.

An observant Jew has to see proof (a diploma) on the premises that the place is under “supervision” by an external “Mashgiach” or overseer. Then again, there are various levels of Kosher strictness.

A person should seek out what is good/healthy for them but certainly not dictate to others what they need to do.

“Getting worked up” as you call it is right on the money but so many faiths take things to the extreme.

Jews can’t eat Catfish as well because it is a searborne animal that does not have scales. It must have scales in order to be Kosher...

Islam is an offshoot of Judaism. The fact that they bastardized it to the point beyond recognition is their problem...and ours! BTW, the moon figures prominently in Judaism as well I think.

There is some very interesting research regarding pork.

Seems pork is so similar to human flesh that most preparations will trigger a mild human immune response.

But how did the old geezers know?

Lots of question marks like that in the ot.

The moon does not figure prominently in Judaism. Allah predates Mohamed. What Mohamed did was make the pagan Arabian religion monotheistic. Allah, is Mohammed's tribes name for the moon god, and the Kaaba was built to the moon god long before Islam, which is why the crescent moon is so prominent in Islam.

I hear what your saying and agree with regards to the Islam-Moon connection, as well as the sabre or AK-47, take your pick.

I thought Judaism and the Lunar calendar were related because a 24 hour day in Judaism is not midnight to midnight. The day ends with the sundown, so it is a sundown to sundown system. There is also a marked ocassion of a new month or as it is called Rosh Hodesh - the moon is tied to that, no?

Figs are apparently not to be eaten by Christians. Good excuse to pass on the Fig Newtons.

First I ever heard of that one.

Pork harbors parasites, or can, including tapeworm. Shellfish (especially in a heavily populated area with questionable sewage treatment) will pick up fecal colliform and other bacteria, as well as concentrate any heavy metals from industry.

In Old Testament times, either could have been a health hazard.

Swine also can present problems with handling and herding, and will eat human flesh, as well as act as a reservoir for viruses, most notably the flu.

There are many reasons the dietary laws made sense.

But, then, there's Bacon...

Judaism uses a lunar calendar, true, but just to be clear, Jews worship no entity but G-d.

Bacon...yes, the true test of Judaic faith. There are so many bacon workarounds nowadays like Turkey Bacon that it seems silly. So you manufacture a food substance that looks, feels and tastes what is forbidden. That's like a Vegetarian eating synthetic soy protein in the shape and smell of a burger.
I could never figure out why there are so many Chinese restaurants in Jewish neighborhoods or for that matter, why Deli joints serve the Reuben sandwhich, (corned beef, sour kraut, melted Swiss cheese on a grilled toast. That is about as non-Kosher as you can get but DAMN, they taste so good! My mouth is watering just writing this...

Reading that provokes a similar reaction!

“1) Judaism does not proselytize, does not actively seek out new followers and makes it difficult to convert to being a Jew, it is not recruiting and never has.
2) Christianity does proselytize, does seek out followers, does actively recruit.”

Judaism was originally tasked with “producing fruit” for God’s Kingdom, i.e. bringing people into it (proselytizing), but again, the religious leaders misread God’s intent. Christ talked about their failure in the parable of the vineyard which, itself, is based on Isaiah’s song of the vineyard in Isaiah 5 (1-7).

God’s Kingdom was never meant just for the Jew, as the promise of being a great nation was made to Abraham, a Gentile, who himself preceded the Law of Moses by at least 700 years. But the promise of that kingdom was (and is) based on faith, not keeping any law. Faith pleases God, legalism (of any stripe) does not.

I grew up on those Reubens at the “Esquire Deli” in Southfield, Michigan. They were the masters and top that off with well-done french fries and a Faygo Red pop (soda)...NIRVANA
