Paula Deen fans vent outrage at Food Network for dumping celebrity cook over past racial slurs

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Watching Paula Deen’s cooking show was a weekend ritual for Marilynne Wilson, who says she’s furious at the Food Network for dumping the comfort-food queen after she acknowledged using racial slurs in the past.

“I was shocked. I thought she’d get a fair trial,” Wilson, a nurse from Jacksonville, Fla., said Saturday after stopping to buy souvenirs at the gift shop Deen owns next to her Savannah restaurant. “I think the Food Network jumped the gun.”

A day after announcing that it’s dropping Deen from its roster of celebrity cooks, the cable network was served heaping portions of Southern fried outrage by her fans.

Angry messages piled up Saturday on the network’s Facebook page, with many Deen fans threating to change the channel for good. “So good-bye Food Network,” one viewer wrote. “I hope you fold like an accordion!!!”

The decision to drop Deen, whose daytime shows have been a Food Network fixture since 2002, came two days after disclosure of a recent court deposition in which Deen was asked under oath if she had ever used the N-word. “Yes, of course,” 66-year-old Deen said, though she added, “It’s been a very long time.”

Deen and her brother are being sued by a former manager of their restaurant who says she was harassed and worked in an environment rife with innuendo and racial slurs.

Wilson’s friend Debbie Brown said the Food Network is “basically convicting” Deen. “They should have waited until it goes to court,” she said.

Deen issued a videotaped apology Friday in asking fans and critics alike for forgiveness. It had been posted online for about an hour when the Food Network released a terse statement that it “will not renew Paula Deen’s contract when it expires at the end of this month.”

In a million years I would have never subjected my best friend to the treatment you dished out. Ever hear of a warning ? The left just sits back & laughs, really, why do they need to do any of the dirty work since most so-called conservatives are well-trained to do it for them.

I didn't feel the need to summarize the long version of the story. I'm glad that you and the several others who have commented feel so inclined to pass judgement on the limited information that I offered in order to demonstrate a point. Look down your nose all you wish, and stand in judgment as your have appointed yourself the authority to do so. I sleep with a clean conscience and have a lifelong friend who not only understands, but apologizes for the occurrence. I don't need your approval.

And since you asked, I ditched fair number of both friends and family that were libs some time back. My life improved immensely, I don’t miss any of them.

And if all humanity agreed with you... wouldn’t what God wants trump all? God says you don’t forgive your enemy... let alone your friend... He won’t forgive you. Grace must be shared to be had. It’s the original copyleft.

“Sleep well.” But wake up before you die.

You left out where I said that it’s your company & your rules, but whatever. Don’t know why you would be surprised at our reaction out here. Seems most people find your behavior unbecoming....to say the last.

I was on a shuttle bus at the airport in Boston during the winter and heard a black female say the N-word multiple times over a cellphone. She was talking about her hood and turf. It was sickening. It is the new America.

It’s weird. They will demean themselves with that word in a heartbeat but don’t you, whitey, dare to call even the most down and dirty Negro, who is a disgrace to the human race let alone the Negro race, a n-gger.

They have to get out of that wallow pit if they want any self respect. The hand up as always is God, but in their churches they often preach a demonic God (like the Rev. Wright did), not Jehovah.

Still waiting for a reply. What is your complaint about my statement “No pity for Libs or people who support them. “

Where is the hate you accused me of? Or were you just hazzing your usual tantrum to try and derail the issues with a hit and run post?

Paula needs to shut up and quit apologizing. It isn’t going to do any good. She gave a dignified answer in court. Let it all die down and move on. The grovelling for forgiveness neve works on the perpetually outraged.

I, two years ago, had to fire my best friend (of over 30 years) for making the same racist remark while in my employ.

So you felt it necessary to fire somebody who has been your friend for 30 years, in order to not upset people who care nothing about you.

She could go on one of the country music channels or are they also owned by pc, liberal northerners?

Country Music is pretty well owned by libs now. Most of the big names are regularly quoted by lib press supporting lib causes. Traditional Country artists are all but extinct.

Hell, look at NASCAR...it went PC too. The last thing CM needs is another lib polluting it. Then again, she’d fit right in.

Still waiting for a reply.

You're not gonna get one Norm, you're being ignored. You've successfully been put in your place on the other Paula Deen threads so there's not much more I can add............Now go hang out with your mirror.

The true measure of a man and his character is how he treats people who can do nothing for him.

Yea I see your full of it. No one ‘put me in my place.’ They ignored and ducked legit questions and issues and made it personal though. But I’m used to that.

Used to dealing with people reinventing reality too. But since you cant reply like an adult, i think people can see that and judge for themselves ;)

So it is okay for rappers to use the N word because they are black, well what about the record company owners who are NOT black and put out all sorts of garbage that is incendiary, insulting to blacks and women and white people and encourages every dangerous anti-social behavior.

If a conservative described blacks in the same way that uber-rich white liberal record company owners describe blacks there would be a volcano of protests from the liberal media. But the way that blacks are portrayed in the music and videos portrays them as ignorant, anti-social, violent, women abusing thugs. Now imagine if someone actually expressed those actions displayed on the videos as they really are—ignorant, anti-social, violent, and women abusing thug behavior? The liberal music industry creates the *street cred* image of blacks which is a caricature of the lowest kind of blacks and this caricature becomes the role model for many black and white youths.

There is not all that much to explore as the Food Network seems rather confident that most American companies do not want their product associated with a woman who thinks that slave themed wedding are a jolly good ole time.

They don't know what advertisers will do until they do it. Given that it was a number of years ago, I think that there is a lot less concern about this than people think there is.

The people who will make the most noise about this are primarily race-baiters who blame everything on all things race. The Paula Deen name carries a lot of weight with consumers - ESPECIALLY Southern consumers - and consumers are what the advertisers are after, anyway.
