Can Democrats Win Back the Deep South?
The Atlantic ^ | June 23, 2013 | Molly Ball

In the coming weeks, Hanauer and Loranne Ausley, a former member of the Florida House of Representatives, plan to launch something they're calling the Southern Project, which will conduct research and formulate messages that can help Democrats win over Southern voters. A pilot study conducted in North Carolina in February, for example, concluded that under the state's Republican governor, Pat McCrory, "there is a clear sense that hardworking taxpayers are getting the short end of the stick at the expense of big corporations and the wealthiest." The set of talking points advises progressives to make arguments "focused around fairness and accountability," whether the issue is tax reform or charter schools. The Southern Project will equip Southern Democrats with similar examples of messages that have been poll-tested to resonate with voters.

Obama lost North Carolina by just 2 percentage points in 2012, but Republicans took the governor's mansion and a supermajority in the state legislature, helped by a multimillionaire named Art Pope who poured money into the party and its candidates. After the election, McCrory put Pope in his administration's budget department and began pushing a highly ideological agenda through the state legislature, sparking a backlash that has resulted in weeks of protests at the statehouse in Raleigh.

Ausley, who ran unsuccessfully for statewide office in Florida in 2010, said Republicans across the South risk alienating voters with their hard rightward turn. Every Republican-led Southern state has rejected the federally funded expansion of Medicaid under Obamacare, she noted; in Florida, Governor Rick Scott tried to accept the funds, but his own Republican-dominated legislature blocked the move. Southern Republicans have recently decried women's entry into the workforce and advocated teaching schoolchildren about proper gender roles.

"Republican legislators are going further than the Southern public wants. There's going to be a backlash."

Well, given the Yankee invasion from the North and the No Comprende vote coming from the other side of the borders perhaps yes.

In the first instance, just had another one show up in the neighborhood....what do you do? “I worked for a constituency firm.” A lobbyist? “Well, yes you could say that.” What did your wife do? “She worked for the Smithsonian.” Perfect...where did you live? “Alexandria Va but we already had a vacation home in North Carolina.” Nice. How did you choose this area to retire to? “Oh, we sold our home in Alexandria and were able to buy this one and put money away too. We like the no state income tax.” Great.

As far as the south of the border group, well, with our senator Rubio deciding to fly the open borders flag, we are screwed from within and from without now. I think I will start flying two Gadsden flags now rather than just the one.

I would say draw a line north of St Augustine across Florida and you are in the south. The rest of the state is a goner.

Florida is a unique area. Parts of N. Florida still have reb holdouts[Gainesville has long since been Berkley Red]. While as a whole, Orlando south is gone; gone Spanish.

St. Augustine the dividing line on the Atlantic side of Florida, no doubt true. On the Gulf side the line is further south. Anything south of Levy County is gone.

When enough of the North Eastern liberal douch bags that have destroyed their own states end up here, and continue to vote for the very communist crap here that they moved to get away from, we will be officially screwed.

Yup. It’s over. To think of the money and time people like us poured into the GOP and the the “Tea Party” reps like Rubio. I feel bad for my kid. I saw Reagan, I chanted USA while watching the Miracle on Ice on a grainy black and white TV, I got goosebumps when Maverick flipped the bird to the Mig pilot in Top Gun, I crawled inch by inch out of poverty to the top 1 percent not only because of will and determination, but because of freedom and capitalism. If he succeeds, he will have his wealth confiscated and his every move watched. Heart wrenching.

I disagree with my compatriots here on the fraud issue. There just isn’t any evidence of rampant fraud. No don’t misunderstand me, I’m as much for ID checks, etc as the next conservative. But to sit here and just say “it’s because they cheated” and the GOP will only be winning about 3=4 States n National elections by 2024.

They don’t need to do anything. McCain, Rubio, and Graham are doing it for them.

Only hard right turns by Republicans will get them elected. I will never again vote for a Democrat lite. Don;t care if you are white or black male or female. You put America and its people first you got my vote.
