Exclusive: U.S. secretly providing training for Syrian rebels (Obama Contras)

WASHINGTON — CIA operatives and U.S. special operations troops have been secretly training Syrian rebels with anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons since late last year, months before President Obama approved plans to begin directly arming them, according to U.S. officials and rebel commanders.

The covert U.S. training at bases in Jordan and Turkey, along with Obama’s decision this month to supply arms and ammunition to the rebels, have raised hopes among the beleaguered opposition that Washington ultimately will provide heavier weapons as well. So far, the rebels say they lack the weapons they need to regain the offensive in Syria’s bitter civil war.

I recall that after Iran-Contra that a bunch of laws were passed to make this much more difficult, I wonder if Obama is violating any of these laws?

I certainly won't have to wonder if he's violating any of those laws, because I know he is. Sometimes it's better to be a pessimist.

In the southeastern city of Khost last month, leaders of two rival militias complained that someone from the United States was paying off both sides to win their cooperation in the war against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Instead, the militias used the money to purchase weapons, which they then turned against each other.

Col. King denied that the U.S. military had anything to do with such payments. He said the denial did not necessarily extend to “OTHER U.S. GOVERNMENT ENTITIES.”

Reports also have been published linking U.S. government entities to militias involved in the opium trade in Afghanistan. Drug smugglers often can obtain information regarding arms purchases and guerrilla activities, Col. King acknowledged. But he said the U.S. military has a strict policy mandating that there be no dealings with any militia involved in the drug trade....
