In a defeat for Republican leadership, the House on Thursday rejected a sweeping farm bill, amid opposition from both sides of the aisle.

More than 60 House Republicans defected and voted against the half-trillion-dollar bill, which sets funding for farm subsidies and other assistance as well as food stamps.

The vote was 234-195 against the bill.

Before celebrating, I’d suggest finding out where the votes came from.

I suspect this is urban Dems voting against slowing the growth of food stamps, and southern representatives wanting more money for peanuts and sugar.

If it went down it was because not enough people’s bread was getting buttered.

Constitutionally, the Fed Govt should have nothing to do with dirt, plants, critters, land or farmers. This is state business.

Exactly this.

They call it the farm bill but it’s the Department of Agriculture appropriations bill. That will still need to be funded.

Denocrats defeated the bill: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2013/roll286.xml
Some conservatives voted against it too though.

One of those groups will be sorry for their vote.

This will get interesting. The senate’s bill is even bigger than the house bill that just went down!

Why did dems vote against it?

Not enough money for foodstamps and school lunches plus a requirement that people getting foodstamps be tested for drugs. Among other things.

I fully expect corn to be declared a minority by the supremes (soon) and be allowed to vote by the kernel. Sugar not manufactured by / from corn could be outlawed. There goes the drinking part from corn sweezin’s.
