NSA admits listening to U.S. phone calls without warrants

The National Security Agency has acknowledged in a new classified briefing that it does not need court authorization to listen to domestic phone calls.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat, disclosed this week that during a secret briefing to members of Congress, he was told that the contents of a phone call could be accessed "simply based on an analyst deciding that."

If the NSA wants "to listen to the phone," an analyst's decision is sufficient, without any other legal authorization required, Nadler said he learned. "I was rather startled," said Nadler, an attorney who serves on the House Judiciary committee.

Secret warrants with secret judges with secret decisions.

Exactly what the Founders intended/s

Anyone involved in protecting this system will never get my vote again. The entire system needs to be scrapped as it is criminal.....they are listening to phone calls of Average Americans in the name of terrorism yet will not do the same to mosques, where the terror emanates.

It’s like living in the Twilight Zone at this point.

Sure thing. You are hitching your wagon to Nadler a known liar and left winger. So how is that a PERSONAL attack on you.

And now you do it again by quoting Maxine Waters. Your sources are impecable.

Let’s cut the crap. You do not know for a certain what NSA is doing. You only know what you’ve read. If you wish to believe a certain way fine. Just don’t try to pass it off here as the truth. And don’t try to smear anyone who disagrees with your belief or your rush to judgement on minimal info and suspect sources.

"I am sorry to say but unless otherwise stated in law, the Constitutional provision against “unreasonable” searches does not - simply by a reasonable vs unreasonable standard - mandate “a warrant” - again, unless otherwise stated in law"

That doesn't track with my reading of the constitution, please explain...

That is an ad hominem. The total basis for your argument is the person, Nadler.

That is the definition of ad hominem "to the person".

Didn't Feinstein say last week, after the leak, that they are only storing "metadata"?

Unless you are using an old rotary dial analog phone, every kind of electronic communication is "data". Phone conversations are changed from analog to digital before they leave your phone. When it is recorded it is recorded as "data".

They are not only picking up every call on their servers, but they are storing every conversation as "data".

They have the capability of storing every electronic conversation. That is why they are building that huge data storehouse in Utah.

George Orwell had no idea that when Big Brother took over he could not only listen to conversations in real time, but go back years and pick up conversations that you have long ago forgotten you even had.

Go to the above article for some sorely missing background.

Also, I’d recommend a good dictionary regarding “ad hominem”. You haven’t really figured it out yet.

This government needs to be reined in.

NSA is just another a huge Federal jobs creation program plus its numerous contractors love it too. There must be lots of kickback and bribes being doled out to Federal employees. Of course NSA mission is expanding into spying/collating information on Americans. Got to keep them NSA employees busy with make work. I wonder how many useless eater affirmative action and LGBT employees are on the payroll?

Sure NSA has a legitimate mission but they have exceeded it all for expanding a bureaucratic empire and pressure from contractors who want in on the money bonanza paid for by the taxpayers and the funny money created by the Federal Reserve out of thin air. It is always party time in DC and the NSA doesn't want to be left out. Les Bon Temps Rouler!

I am not speaking to Nadler. I’m speaking to his veracity as a source of info and how some here want to blindly believe what he says. Are you claiming that this guy is a legitimate source? If so, please state your criteria for such a claim.

His claim may be true. You have no way of determining if it is so. That is my point.

"Excuse me Mr. Robinson, could you speak a little closer to the mic please, it's under the left [SHIFT] key. Thanks."

Jim, I am sickened by these recent revelations, even though I suspected all along. It's like having the feeling that somebody is cheating on you, but you don't have proof, and then all of a sudden your buddy tells you you're being played for a fool. Except that this is on such a scale that is horrifying rather than simply sickening.

Can we even survive until the next elections?!?

If Nadler knew the slightest bit about Cook County politics, marxism, and Obama’s sketchy background, he wouldn’t be startled. He would view this simply as confirmation of what we’ve all suspected for five years...the tyrant wannabe continues to move us toward dictatorship and enslavement.

Your point is logical.

However, Nadler is a proven liar -- he is, after all, a liberal.

He gains nothing by admitting that the NSA can listen to any call they wish. Indeed, his side is hurt by that admission.

Consequently, it is reasonable to believe that, in this particular case, he just might be telling the truth.

Precisely. You ARE "speaking to his veracity as a source of info".

His claim may be true. You have no way of determining if it is so. That is my point.

And a good point it is. The solution is to cross check, not to reject out-of-hand.

Maxine, same thing. I'd expect the SB to blab the truth, only because the B is so S she thinks it's a good thing!

OTOH, she is so S that one simply must verify that what she thinks is true actually happened!

OTOOH, we are getting essentially the same story from multiple warring sources.

OTOOH, planting a story to multiple sources is a known disinformation technique.

OTOOOH, we do know the NSA has the technological capability of doing precisely this, and we do know that the left regards 1984 as a manual, not a cautionary tale.
