Moderate Candidate Wins Iran's Presidential Vote By FARNAZ FASSIHI

BEIRUT—Hassan Rohani, the candidate backed by the opposition and reformist political factions, was declared the winner in Iran's presidential vote, giving a decisive victory to Iranians calling for change.

Iran's interior minister, Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, said at a press conference Saturday in Tehran that Mr. Rohani had obtained more than 50% of more than 36 million votes cast in Friday's election.

Conservative candidates did poorly in vote counts so far, especially the candidates perceived to be the closest to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The current nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, ranked fourth and Ali Akbar Velayati, a former foreign minister, was fifth. Mohsen Rezaei, the former commander of the Revolutionary Guards, who made the economy his top campaign issue, ranked third. The votes for all three men are below 13% so far.

Iran analysts and media pundits had said that if Mr. Rohani wins with a large margin, it should serve as wake-up call for Mr. Khamenei and his circle of conservative advisers that their hard-line policies ranging from the standoff over the nuclear issue to the dire state of the economy have been rejected by the majority of the population.

A moderate also believes a rape victim should be hanged instead of stoned to death.

Candidates think this time, this time, it will be different, they like me.

Fools.

The media IS the rat party.

They allowed the Reformist to win so they could allow the Green movement to vent off agitation since the last election.

I guarantee you in a year or so they’ll start to crack down on Reformists once they’ve calmed down and are out in the open again.

If you read Green Movement tweets, some of the wiser Iranians are well aware of this cynical ploy.

In the good old days of Soviet Communism they used to talk about the “moderate” ones.

“Moderate” is a MSM joke expression.

“Moderate” in Iranian terms means nothing since the mullahs ultimately control the country, they even decided who was allowed to be a candidate in this election.

“The media IS the rat party.”

Anybody w 2 brains cells to rub together knows this. Yet the GOP never even lobbies for a conservative moderator. They never utter so much as a peep. It’s almost like they want to lose, or something.

Sound quite similar to the Presidential debates in the USA, especially during the primaries.

“I am a patient person and I can tolerate a lot,” added Rezaie. “With these repetitive, discontinuous, short, one-to-three minute answers, the people are being harmed and the eight people up here are being insulted.”’

"Moderate," indeed. No one, but NO ONE, is allowed to stand on the ballot in Iran who isn't 100 percent approved by the Mullahs.

While it may be true that there were significant differences between the 12th Imam crowd of the outgoing "Aminijahad" and the big cheese head mullah, the latter accusing the former of witchcraft, etc. -- the idea that this isn't designed to divert the West from Iran's nuclear ambitions can't be ignored.

The proxy war between the Saudis and Iranian continues to heat up, with the anxious help of the present administration, and we could be slouching into a world war.

Anyone for a betting pool on the first asshat in the Legacy Media to mention an "Iranian Spring?"

I agree w you, there are similarities. However, there were differences too. Most strikingly, all 8 Iranian candidates were equally humiliated, as opposed to here, where the Dem is enabled & the Republican is undercut. Also, all 8 Iranian candidates rebelled against the moderator, whereas here the Dem & the moderator stage a lovefest, & the GOPer submissively accepts the 2 against 1 format.

Finally, our debates, while admittedly weak in format, never descend to the Pictionary level:

“Eventually, the moderator had the good sense to switch gears:

Presenter: in respect to candidates who objected , we stop our short questions. We show you some pictures, we want to know your interpretation.

What proceeded was, as Esfandiari put it, “a presidential Rorschach test” where candidates were shown pictures including a ship (prompting candidate Hasan Rowhani to reasonably reference how international sanctions are hurting sea transport) and a patient recovering from surgery in a hospital (which launched candidate Mohammad Gharazi into a more tangential discussion of Iran’s obesity problem).”

A “moderate?” woo-hoo!

Now he will stop the centrifuges, stop aiding Hezbollah, stop aiding Assad, stop saying idiotic things about Israel, begin talks with Israel, stop harassing Gulf shipping, disband the Revolutionary Guards,

mm-hmmm.

I had the misfortune of watching part of the See BS Evening News Saturday night.

The anchor was speaking by satellite to their correspondent in London, Elizabeth Palmer.

This idiot Elizabeth Palmer said that all the candidates in the Iranian election are “conservative.” Then she had the gall to say this, “It would be like if all the candidates in our presidential election were members of the TEA Party.”

Profanity is discouraged on this web site so I won’t say what I shouted at the TV from the kitchen.
