The rumble in Round Lake is over.

As its first order of business, a newly appointed seven-member Board of Trustees held an emergency meeting Wednesday night and unanimously voted to reinstate longtime librarian Theresa Marchione to her job with back pay.

"Come on back, Theresa," said Bill Ryan as sustained applause from the audience filled Village Hall.

Marchione, a familiar face at the Wesley Avenue facility for decades, had been terminated for shutting down the library 40 minutes early on May 29 because of a tornado warning. A powerful twister touched down later in nearby Vischer Ferry.

Since Marchione's dismissal, upset residents in this tiny municipality have galvanized around her, prompting the resignation of the seven board members under pressure followed by the departure of Library Director Carol Sheffer.

Earlier in the week, the Women's Round Lake Improvement Society, which controls the library's board, demanded Sheffer's resignation and that Marchione be rehired.

On Wednesday, Lance Spallholz said there was a consensus in this tight village of 627 residents that Marchione was wronged.

"All the people here are happy with what happened tonight," said Spallholz, adding that he believes the bitterness towards the old board and this strange saga will be short-lived.

With all votes counted and barring a total recount order, Republican Kathleen Marchione has a 110-vote edge with just 50 votes that could still be contested.

The resignations came after two nights of meetings at which the board and library director Carol Sheffer were lambasted for the firing.

wow... thanks for the rest of the story... so the 7 board members all resigned because of the firing of the librarian... the new board members (where did they come from?) reinstated the wronged librarian... she closed 40 minutes early because of a tornado warning... i don’t see that any disciplinary action should come about because of that decision... it was not a careless decision... good for the tight-knit community for holding their reps accountable...

What’s amazing is that a village of 627 residents has a library director and a Library Board of Trustees.

I don’t think they are compensated in any way. Otherwise, you can bet the biggest blue haired busy body types do seek out these positions.

I must have missed the part about support or opposition to fake same-sex “marriage” being a factor. Even in your other links.

Remember, this is not political! Nothing to see here. It’s about a tornado warning!

In the mean time, the Washington Post just picked up the story:

NY librarian fired for closing during tornado warning is rehired; most of library board quits

(This is about a tornado warning the same way Benghazi was about a video.)
