Top military leader disputes diplomat on Benghazi

WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Wednesday that four members of Army special forces in Tripoli were never told to stand down after last year's deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, disputing a former top diplomat's claim that the unit might have helped Americans under siege. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey said timing and the need for the unit to help with casualties from Benghazi resulted in orders for the special forces to remain in Tripoli. Four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, died in two separate attacks several hours apart on the night of Sept. 11. Gregory Hicks, a former diplomat in Tripoli at the time of the attack, told a House panel last month that the unit was told to stand down. Dempsey said that was not the case. "They weren't told to stand down. A 'stand down' means don't do anything," he said. "They were told that the mission they were asked to perform was not in Benghazi, but was at Tripoli airport." Republicans insist that the Obama administration is guilty of a cover-up of the events despite a scathing independent report that faulted the State Department for inadequate security at the diplomatic mission. GOP lawmakers also have questioned why the military couldn't get aircraft or forces to Benghazi in time to thwart the second attack after the first incident that killed Stevens. Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., questioned Dempsey about Hicks' testimony at a hearing on the military budget.

So much wrong was going on there, but all this denying and twisting of logic points directly to a cover-up. Perhaps a story Yahoo! ran two days ago about the CIA being concerned because they found SA-7 handbooks in Mali is where the cover-up comes from. Knowing that shoulder operated missiles that can take down a commercial airliner is in the hands of Islamic terrorists should scare all of us who fly. I can see why why Obama would want that news covered up. Should a plane be shot down with one of these missiles, Obama should take complete blame as it was his idiotic policy in Libya that allowed so many weapons to go to terrorists.

“If the special Forces were not told to stand down, what did they do to rescue our Embassy people?”

They were told to go to the Tripoli airport to meet the wounded coming in to get them to the hospital in Tripoli. That General has already said that in a hearing as I heard that hearing.

When he says they were not told to stand down, he means they had an order to meet the wounded at that airport. He says to stand down means don’t do anything and they had an order.

To stand down means don’t do anything, but they had an order to go to Tripoli airport to meet the wounded coming in and get them to the hospital in Tripoli - so they had an order to do that, therefore they were not told to stand down.

Dempsey and former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta had told the Senate in February that the military couldn't get resources to Benghazi in time and scrambling jet fighters wasn't the right course.

Whoops, if you read this far and are still conscientiously reading you can see that Dempsey is lying. He should have blamed the Sequester for the staffing shortfall.

Americans here is used in the sense of the word 'nobodies' and not in the sense that they're, you know, Americans representing America or in the service of America or deserving of any sort of attention or protection from our government which was monitoring the event from numerous HQs in real time. Furthermore the significance of the 9/11 date of the attacks has nothing to do with anything else from history despite the fact that Islamists are monomaniacs when it comes to historical dates. Also, please ignore the fact that the British, French and Red Cross pulled their people out of Libya based on intelligence and hostilities leading up to this date.

Of course, the reporter is just reporting a planted story and didn't need to do any background or research. It's not editorializing if you're just reporting what the government press release said, right?
