(Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Tuesday announced a $20 billion plan to prepare for rising sea levels and hotter summers expected as a result of climate change in the coming decades.
The plan, which follows widespread destruction wreaked by Superstorm Sandy last year, included about 250 recommendations ranging from new floodwalls and storm barriers to upgrades of power and telecommunications infrastructures.
It coincided with a report updating projections of the impact of climate change, saying that over the next 40 years the number of sweltering summer days could double or even triple and that the sea level surrounding New York City could rise by 2 feet (0.6 meter).
The aim of Bloomberg's plan was to ensure that the subway, transit, sewer and water, energy and food distribution systems would continue to function for the city's 8 million people.

So now we have a cooling problem, and that’s proof that we have to do something about global warming?
Given what Sandy did, this is a prudent course of action but NOTHING to do with global warming.
when you build on an island or along a coast, you take your chances with mother nature and you pay through the nose for insurance because of it. Blaming the atmosphere won’t change that.
Not unlike building on an ever moving coastal sand barrier island.
Typical LEFTIST DEMOCRAT. Supports funding of a problem that does not exist. That about sums up the whole SOCIALIST DEMOCRATIC AGENDA
For a cool million, I could be an instultant. I mean consultant.
I was listening to this report on the radio here today. The group made a statement that temps will be 4 to 6 degrees higher on average by 2050. I call BS.
I'm so tired of that name ... 80 mph winds and a 9' storm surge. Katrina was 125mph with a 25' surge and Ike was 110mph with a 22' surge. Sandy was a bitch of a storm because of population density .. It was completely over hyped because it distrupted the lives of people in the MSM .. and God knows they are more important than people in flyover country.
Use resources to prepare for the inevitable climate change. Throughout Earth’s history the only constant in climate is CHANGE. Where ever you are living right now has at one time been part of the ocean floor AND covered in hundreds of feet of ice at some other time in history. Long before man as we know him walked the Earth, the climate changed on this Planet hundreds of times.
Maybe they could tap Al Gore, he’s got lots of money.
Tropical storms and hurricanes have been hitting the eastern coast of North America for ages. More than a few have hit NYC since I was born.
There are no real alternatives to the tunnels for the trains and motor vehicles under the East and Hudson Rivers, IMHO.
Pissing on yer head, and telling you it’s snow-melt.
