Levees, removable walls in plan to protect NYC
Associated Press ^ | Jun 11, 2013 2:29 PM EDT | Jennifer Peltz

Removable flood walls would be set up for much of lower Manhattan, a 15-to-20-foot levee would guard part of Staten Island and gates and levees would shield Brooklyn as part of a nearly $20 billion plan Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed Tuesday to protect New York City from storms and the effects of global warming.

Bloomberg’s proposals also include building dunes in Staten Island and the Rockaways, firming up the shoreline with bulkheads in various neighborhoods and considering building a levee and a new “Seaport City” development at the South Street Seaport that would echo nearby Battery Park City.

The mayor also is suggesting giving $1.2 billion in grants to property owners to flood-proof their buildings and $50 million to nursing homes to improve theirs; making hospitals even in rarely flooded areas upgrade their pumps and electrical equipment; and expanding beaches and marshes, among other ideas. …

Fueled by the city’s blow from Superstorm Sandy last fall, the sweeping proposals represent a sizable step up in scale and urgency for a mayor who has for years emphasized the threat climate change poses to the nation's biggest city, which has 520 miles of coastline. …

He’s really worried about all that flushing as a result of the continued availability of Big Gulps.

For one, they’ll triple the tax on 16 oz soft drinks. To make up for the banned larger sizes./s

These monuments will someday join the heads on Easter Island as a testament to an ignorant and superstitious people.

Other coastal cities such as London, St. Petersburg, and in the Netherlands already have coastal flood defenses just as elaborate and just as expensive.

There's nothing stupid about building flood barriers for NYC - they will end up being less expensive than the damage from future storms.

The STUPID thing is saying they're needed because of global warming. They're actually needed because NYC is a coastal city in an area that's been exposed to powerful storms for 10,000 years.

I suggest a $100 entry fee for entering the city.

I have no problem with sea walls, just the global warming excuse.

For millennia, storms have hit coastlines, creating new natural structures from the wreckage and destroying others. It is nature and it will be here a lot longer than us.

Billions of tax dollars to protect what? Wealthy people’s beachfront properties? Here is a suggestion, MOVE!

However you can rest assured they will be incredibly expensive and built by companies with political connections, and not like in South America where they are built and maintained with convict labor.

Bloomberg has a lot of money. Maybe he could spot the city for 20 billion or so to get the project “on the ground”....it’s only fair that the 1% should pay for it.

It’s one thing for people to put expensive second houses on barrier islands.

We can’t really move lower Manhattan - it’s already the center of our financial infrastructure, and it’s actually cheaper to just build the barrier than try to move Wall Street to North Dakota.

Yes indeed. Freaked me out because the father of the girl I was dating was a cop who was a dead-ringer for Lee Van Cleef.

We could do without those financial systems. They only suck money out of the system, not put money in. Central banking and the fed are the worst that has happened to this nation. The manipulated stock market is third.
