While many individuals have looked at precious metals for moderate gains and even some losses over the last year, the combination of base metals like lead and brass have seen an incredible return--particularly when those base metals are combined to form .22 ammunition. Think about it--from one year ago until now, .22 ammunition is up over 400%. It was approximately $21 to $23 per 500 rounds in May 2012, and it's now $100 to $135 for 500 rounds.
.22 ammunition has been easy to find and cheap to buy for decades. For this reason, .22 rifles and pistols have long been among some of most popular firearms in America. In fact, the first gun I ever shot was my dad's High Standard Double Nine .22 revolver and the first firearm I owned was a Marlin model 60 .22 rifle.
But following Obama's re-election,there arose a sense of uncertainty among gun owners. And this lead to moderate runs on ammo. Then President Obama and other gun control advocates came out in force following the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary, and .22 ammunition was literally sucked off the shelves.
Not only is it now 400% higher than it was a year ago, but it's so scarce that when stores get a shipment of it they typically limit sales to one or two 50 round boxes per customer. And buying a full brick of 500 rounds anywhere but online is almost unheard of.
Historically precious metals have been a great hedge in uncertain economic times. But lead and brass may be making a comeback.

The Phoenix Arms is a better choice ... the barrel arrangement is such that it can be swapped for a five inch barrel threaded to take a suppressor easily, and the pistol is very reliable when clean and oiled properly. Ten round mags are also plentiful and in expensive.

Well, I live in the Bay Area, and I am able to buy sufficient quantities of all calibers. Bought 100 rds. of 5.56mm just yesterday. Yeah, it costs more than it did a year ago, but it is available.
Hubby received a backorder from 6 mnths ago the other day. Someone immediately offered him $100 a box.

With properly placed shots .22 rounds are very deadly at best, at worst they can be extremely annoying to a living target.
Tell me about it. I just went out to the local gun shop at lunchtime. No.22LR to be had. On the other hand, they did have a nice new supply of AR-15 P-MAG 30's at $24 each, which is way down from the "panic" days a few months back, so I picked up a couple to add to the SHTF box. They also had a good supply of extended mags for .22... just no ammo to full them with.
those prices are crazy!! I just bought a couple box of WWB .45s for 48/100 rds...

Forget AMMO! The time to buy that was 10 years ago when you could walk into a gun show and buy a case of milsurp .308 (1440 rounds) for $125.
I mean if you don’t have all you need go buy some sure. But the oldest rule of investing is “Buy Low, Sell High” and you’ve missed the “buy low” part of both the gold and ammo markets.
Good news though. We’re still in the buy low market for food. (Though it’s going up. When was the last time you saw 5 for a dollar Kraft Macaroni and Cheese dinners?)
You can buy all the rice and beans you like at the local supermarket for a nominal price. Ditto for most other food stuffs from canned coffee and tuna to bulk olive oil.
But you know that already, didn’t you?
Well, if you want to make a profit, sell soon, because the shortage won’t last forever.

It’s that little quiet one you use the fill the stew pot.
If they’re still alive after the shot, they won’t have a functioning brain to work with.
Or to take care of that neighbor’s “pet” that you’ve warned about staying away from your livestock...
Nope. Just leave the bodies where they fall.
It’s more important to be easily concealable in your pocket, yet still controllable with the heavier recoil of a light weight .22LR pocket pistol.
