Rather than ringing our hands and thinking the whole thing is the next conspiracy to justify our own fears, perhaps we should be taking the lead in tearing down this machine for our future. This is a GOLDEN opportunity for us to take this country back.

Thank you for posting that. It is time to deal with it.

Not sure if Snowden is the treasonous one...or the folks who still support Free Trade with Communist China.

Standing against the rogue Federal Government isn’t treason, giving away our nation’s wealth and technological secrets is.

...”Character assassination has begun.
Our nation is dirty and too full of bad secrets. This guy exposed the rot. They will say bad things about him, but I ain’t buying their lies”...

Me, neither!

...”And this is for everyone else: I don’t get this. Here we have a guy who is telling everyone what most people on FR thought for years but were told we’re all a bunch of nuts. Now, here we have a whistleblower confirming all this, and we people start thinking that he’s NOT beleiveable??”...

Insane, isn’t it?

I know a LOT of techies without formal educations. And a lot with no FORMAL background in computing. Best database programmer I ever knew. . . .had his B.A. in English, his concentration was Elizabethan Poetry.

A LOT of the really serious coders don’t have formal credentials. . . .much to the chagrin of the HR Mandarins. . .

Another guy I know, only finally got his Bachelor’s at age 29. He was co-author of a major security software package, and has two O’Reilly books out. But he had problems finding a regular job, because he didn’t have the proper tickets (i.e. degree and certifications) punched. . .

Part of this problem lies in the fact we don’t have *in house* techs to do this work and the outside vendors don’t, like Booz Allen Hamilton, don’t have the security to hold this data...excluding the huge civil rights issues in play.

His partner....you mean his girlfriend?

You're guess is as good as mine, but I'd bet on seeing pigs fly first! He's got that Bradley Manning look. I remember when that story broke and FReepers were saying, "Gee, why do you think he is homosexual?"

We need to distinguish between breaking the law (value to the enemy of disclosed secrets) and the value to the public for blowing the whistle. It's pretty clear he needs to turn himself in, then get a jury trial. He ought to plead guilty and ask for leniancy, but not if the charges are anything like those against Manning. Manning disclosure was far more serious.

The actual document theft is less serious than Sandy Berger and the value to the public should be balanced against the disclosure. Needs to be more than a slap on the wrist though.

It wasn’t a guess. He said he left his girlfriend behind in Hawaii. NSA has already visited with her.

IT hires tend to be in their early to mid-20s. Getting clearance takes maybe a year. You can find 20-somethings in IT.
But the fact that he is in China, when his identity is revealed, suggests that they were helping him or his employers. The release was planned, and he had an escape route to somewhere that he couldn’t be arrested.

For all I know he could work for China but I haven’t heard any denials of what he leaked, just excuses.

I am more worried that our government has become so rogue that this country is it's least "free" in our entire 237 year history.

This stinks to high heaven, and rather than point fingers, the people need to "excise" the rot by purging our entire government top to bottom.

A "do-over" is needed creating a system that our founding fathers intended.

I think one has an obligation to reveal secrets if they involve violation of the constitution. I don’t care what his level of education is and usually provided one has the necessary experience and the ability to get a clearance its not the primary concern. The truth is that security is only as good as the individuals you trust with it and the federal government is chock full of radical leftists so if people that hate America can get jobs at DHS and DOD then that pretty much leaves the gates open.

When I was working at DHS under CBP I over heard conversations expressing sentiments that attacking Texas with a nuke was more appealing than attacking Iraq. One individual who had clearances at DoD, CIA, FBI, NSA in a fairly high level meeting felt the need to express how Condoleezza Rica was not a nice person and that even her family hated her. It wasn’t surprising that he said something like that but that he felt entirely comfortable expressing that sentiment during the Bush admin in a meeting with higher management. I also don’t think I’ve ever seen more transsexuals working anywhere.

Don’t get me wrong. The majority of folks working there are great but never assume that because someone has a security clearance that they are patriotic Americans. Also security was such at the Kingstowne office that even with swipe access they had spent years trying to find out who was ‘vandalizing’ the mens restroom and still hadn’t figured it out.
