German dam breaks near Magdeburg as Hungary floods recede
BBC News ^ | 6/9/13 | BBC

A dam has broken on the flood-swollen River Elbe in eastern Germany, forcing thousands of people to leave their homes around the city of Magdeburg.

Water levels in Magdeburg stood at 7.44m (24ft) on Sunday, nearly four times higher than normal (2m).

In Hungary, water levels on the Danube in the capital Budapest are believed to have peaked and officials say defences should prevent flooding in most areas.

At least 15 people have died in the floods in Central Europe.

Analysts say the damage will cost billions of euros to clean up.

The authorities in Germany are investigating an anonymous letter threatening attacks on several dams.

The motive behind the threats is not known, but the threat is being taken seriously, says the BBC's Stephen Evans in Berlin.

Sandbags

With levels on the Danube peaking, the mayor of Budapest sought to reassure the city's inhabitants and said leaking dykes had been fixed.

"Budapest is not at risk of a catastrophe, the level is not expected to rise significantly," Istvan Tarlos said.

My Sister sent me a picture today of the Danube at Budapest.

The river was nearly up to the bottom of the bridge. She was afraid they would not be able to cross into Pest as she is having some dental work done there.

Thank you for the link, NormsRevenge. I’m sorry to hear that the German dam broke near Magdeburg and that Hungary also suffered floods, as well as Germany. The pictures at your link showed something I’ve never seen before—ornate buildings of centuries past with their lower floors under water.

Sending prayers up for those who lost loved ones in the flood. There was a lot of that in Oklahoma last week, that accompanied the tornadoes and left a 2.5-mile wide plowed field where houses used to be.’

I’m particularly troubled to hear people were threatening to blow up more German dams. I hope the perpetrators of those calls are caught and have to account for why they would want to see everyday civilians die as they seek to call attention to themselves for one thing or another.

They are safe but I think the bridges are closed. They live in Pest but their dentist is in Buda, or maybe vice-versa.

It must be the global warming. Rivers never overflowed their banks before the industrial revolution.

I hope all those Germans and Hungarians are alright, whatever the cause of it.

Central Europe has been flooding for sometime now....I was watching when it first became an issue for them In Prague....it’s a real mess over there. Seems like some things take awhile before the US sees other nations too have major weather issues this time of year.

Course we’ve got our hands plenty full with weather issues and our crumbling government!

How about a re-casting of Force 10 from Navarone?

On second thought - Naah. Tough to replace Robert Shaw.

"leaking dykes?"

I don't even want to know what that is about.

Perhaps they meant "leaking dikes"? Spellcheck doesn't do everything.
