Posted on 06/06/2013 5:11:25 PM PDT by mandaladon
The New York State Senate today passed a bill that creates the crime of aggravated harassment of a police or peace officer. The bill (S.2402), sponsored by Senator Joe Griffo (R-C-I, Rome) would make it a felony to harass, annoy, or threaten a police officer while on duty.
Our system of laws is established to protect the foundations of our society, Senator Griffo said. Police officers who risk their lives every day in our cities and on our highways deserve every possible protection, and those who treat them with disrespect, harass them and create situations that can lead to injuries deserve to pay a price for their actions.
The bill establishes this crime as a Class E Felony, punishable by up to four years in prison.

The agents of evil are removing the veneer.
Whose definitions of harass and “annoy” is the Gestapo going to use? This looks like a real revenue raiser to me. Those politicians are smart.
This pretty much gives the cops the right to beat the crap out of anyone. FUNY.
it is because of these things i dont care when cops die
If the cops now have the right not to be annoyed, who will be the next to be granted this right?
This is the back door to outlawing the filming of police activity. It’ll take one judge to rule that filming is interfering is annoying the police.
It is dangerous for the rest of us to make police work too comfortable for the thin skinned.
I suppose taking photos or videos of them is now considered to be annoying.
I bet I know who gets to define “harrassment.”
not anyone , only if you are a white normal Christian male will be attacked, blacks, homo’s, turd pokers, illegals, Hispanics will never be attacked
Anyone else sure that video tapping them will be considered harassment?
or that feeding the meter for someone else will be?
This law is ripe for abuse.
This will certainly give them an excuse to shoot dogs and cats—not that they seem to need one anyway.
there seems to be a new wave of cops who are nothing but punks who have never heard of the Constitution
Oh calm down people. There isn’t the slightest change that this law will be abused.
There, fixed it.
In before the tyranny.
Just last week I annoyed a cop by telling him that he was being absurd for giving me a ticket for not wearing a seat belt.
Only much more capable.

Conservative Statism on display, and the reason I’m a Conservative Libertarian.
No, I’m not a member of the Libertarian Party that supports homosexual marriage, distribution of heroin, open borders, etc.
>> This looks like a real revenue raiser to me.
It’s a felony. A misdemeanor can prevent one from getting a job. This far exceeds the revenue gig. Don’t even think about looking the wrong way at a cop on the rag.
AGGRAVATED HARASSMENT OF A POLICE OFFICER OR PEACE OFFICER IS A CLASS E FELONY.
This will prevent civilians from filming any cops in action.
Good luck with that law. A lot of people have instant video uploads of police harassment which can be on the Internet in seconds before their cameras or phones are confiscated.
There is a very large cohort of “conservatives” who are holster-sniffers.
If this flies, then the next felony they will go for will be harassing or annoying an elected official, or campaigning against one.
So I’m “down on the corner” playing the kazoo for Willie and the Poor Boys and some cop comes up and arrests me for being “annoying”. Yikes! Sieg Heil!
I second that. Cops have become the tools of the State. They will follow orders to the end. Just like the good Kapos in the Concentration camps or the Polizie in German cities. Now they have access to us like no time before. We are screwed people and the cops are going to take advantage of it. Not all cops are but, but the bad ones make the good ones all part of the same team.
Lots of USSC rules make this law unconstitutional.
Or annoy a cop by asking for directions. Sieg Heil indeed!
This is the equivalent of hanging a bull’s eye on the backs of all NYS cops. It is a way to drive a wedge between the population and police and turn this into an “us” vs. “them” conflict. The cops will be give the choice of becoming jack booted thugs or siding with the population. Guess the side “good union folks” will favor? Bingo! The corrupt politicians and state.
A.K.A "passing a law that's already on the books".
Ah yes, but the cops will still be able to harass conservatives! Like in Milwaukee the libs can block the streets to traffic but supporters of our Republican Governor could not hold signs on a pedestrian bridge. The libs and the unions of course could HANG signs on the same bridges before the recall election.
Nice to see things don’t change....
Does this clown Griffo have an IQ of record? He sounds like a complete retard, albeit a monumentally arrogant one. He obviously didn't have the time or the smarts to check national crime statistics. But that's fundamentally irrelevant. More on that later.
The two sentences above are a non sequitur. Being a nation of laws does not neutralize the rights and protections of the Constitution. Or the natural law of self protection. Police agencies are created by the citizens to protect and serve; not to rule. The last state of affairs we need to create is the ability for criminals to determine what constitutes 'disrespect or harassment.' Yes, LEOs can behave like or actually be criminals. A dead citizen has no defense even if he is dead right. Stories of LEOs who abuse their power, cite non-existing laws to intimidate citizens are legion now. I can imagine how much worse it will get.
We can agree only on "creating situations that can lead to injuries. But, like "national security," we can't allow criminals to define the term any way they choose.
The number of innocent civilians killed or injured annually as victims of crime exceeds the number of LEOs killed or injured. Yet, this MENSA graduate wants to disarm the ordinary citizen. The Law enforcement folks have guns. When seconds count and the police is just minutes away won't cut it!
I predict an immediate legal challenge and another loss for the wannabe banana republic types.
This is deliberate. They are making more things felonies to disarm us.
Can't own a gun if you are a felon.
That makes more sense IMHO.
That's already worse than a felony, courtesy of the IRS.
You haven't been paying attention.
I'm serious, those questions have already been asked of applicants, running for office is a no-no, as is teaching young people the Constitution.
Bingo, we have a winner. Got to stop the video taping of the police. The police can make up any excuse (after they seize your camera) and then it’s their word against yours .... and you know that their word is worth more within the system.
I think that you have spotted the same tendency that I have over the last several years. Every misdemeanor is now being elevated to felony status. Possession of a single bullet is a felony, possession of a rifle magazine (even without the rifle) is a felony, etc. All of these felonies then involve revocation of you voting rights and more importantly your rights to own weapons.
There should be a Master's Thesis on the evolution of tyranny in this country.
Just read the major newspapers between 1955 and 1965, when installation of seat belts was made mandatory for the manufacturers, but wearing them would NEVER be mandatory.
The persuasion was based entirely on the survival instincts of the average person, in having the option of wearing them. If the heavy boot of the wannabe tyrants had suggested otherwise, the bill would have never passéd. Now, it's just another "revenue enhancement."
Just like the Income Tax, but that's another story...
Remember the friendly, catchy little "Buckle Up For Safety!" jingle?
Now, the commercial is the gravel-voiced JackBoot: "KlickItErTicket!!!"
We've come a long way, baby - on the road to tyranny, as you said, publius.
Yes, and Officer Cartman isn't known for invading a peasant's personal space. /sarc
Amazing how the Founders got along for DECADES without any cops...
Now, we have an occupying army who solved the problem of the Third Amendment by forcing the peasants to pay them $50 an hour so they could buy some swell digs, instead of having to move in to the substandard housing of the peasant scum.
Its beyond time to mount defense.
New name of NYPD- GESTAPO
In NY, until the early 60’s, one was able to “PHYSICALLY RESIST” what he thought was an “Unlawful Arrest”. “We’ve come a long way, baby”- towards totalitarianism
