NSA, FBI Operation PRISM Tapped Into Nine Internet Companies

Since the Guardian story about the NSA seizure of the Verizon phone records of millions of Americans dropped last night, the administration and its allies have been asserting that privacy wasn’t invaded because intelligence agencies didn’t listen in on those calls.

“The order reprinted overnight does not allow the government to listen in on anyone’s telephone calls. The information acquired does not include the content of any communications or the name of any subscriber. It relates exclusively to call details, such as a telephone number or the length of a telephone call,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters aboard Air Force One today.

“The alleged FISA Court order contained in the Guardian article does not give the government authority to listen in on anyone’s telephone call, nor does it provide the government with the content of any communication or the name of any subscriber,” Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Vice Chairman Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) said in a joint statement. “As with other FISA authorities, all information the government may receive under such an order would be subject to strict limitations.”

Then, this evening, the other shoe dropped.

In what looks more and more like a revolt from within the intelligence community, the Washington Post broke a story about a secret operation that has gained steam since its inception in 2007 that lets National Security Agency and the FBI tap directly into the servers of nine U.S. Internet companies with access to audio, video, photographs, e-mails, documents and connection logs.

An internal presentation on the Silicon Valley operation, intended for senior analysts in the NSA’s Signals Intelligence Directorate, described the new tool as the most prolific contributor to the President’s Daily Brief, which cited PRISM data in 1,477 articles last year. According to the briefing slides, obtained by The Washington Post, “NSA reporting increasingly relies on PRISM” as its leading source of raw material, accounting for nearly 1 in 7 intelligence reports.

That is a remarkable figure in an agency that measures annual intake in the trillions of communications. It is all the more striking because the NSA, whose lawful mission is foreign intelligence, is reaching deep inside the machinery of American companies that host hundreds of millions of American-held accounts on American soil.

The technology companies, which participate knowingly in PRISM operations, include most of the dominant global players of Silicon Valley. They are listed on a roster that bears their logos in order of entry into the program: “Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple.” PalTalk, although much smaller, has hosted significant traffic during the Arab Spring and in the ongoing Syrian civil war.

And this revelation is thanks to a whistleblower:

Firsthand experience with these systems, and horror at their capabilities, is what drove a career intelligence officer to provide PowerPoint slides about PRISM and supporting materials to The Washington Post in order to expose what he believes to be a gross intrusion on privacy. “They quite literally can watch your ideas form as you type,” the officer said.

Everything you say in a phone call, type on the Interent, and much of what you do is monitored.

Has been for a while now. Gotten worse since 9/11.

As FR says, loose lips sink ships.

Is it possible that PRISM is a diversionary issue and that it doesn’t exist? Possibly a “poison pill” (easily disproved) to make those wishing to have resolution to other, legit scandals look kooky?

The story was “leaked” by a “career intelligence officer” who has expressed “horror at their capabilities”

1. The leak has come through the Guardian (usually cooperates with the left)
2. The leak is backed by Politico (mouthpiece for the White House) and reported by WaPo (America’s leftmost MSM outlet)
3. Apple and Google deny involvement (private companies)
4. Why is a “career intelligence officer” coming forward now? The timing is highly suspicious. Similar Clinton systems were enough to draw any “career intelligence officers” out with their capabilities. Why now, with other scandals out there?
5. IMHO, there is far far far too much information to mine through Google/Apple/MS to make it useful.

Do we suppose that this is “the other shoe” that people were talking about a few weeks ago that the Obama staff members were terrified about, or is that something else again?

Interesting that the story appeared in the Guardian, a very left-wing paper. I bet it was shopped to the New York Times, the LA Times, the Washington Post, and others. But they will protect Dear Leader at all costs.

It’s everything;

Ebay & Amazon purchases and searches, google searches, email, chat, tax returns, parking & speeding tickets, DMV reg info, real estate documentation.

And it has been going on for YEARS.

And before that it was intercept of audio calls.

YEARS AND YEARS.

There is the USA, and then there is America, and there is a DARK CHASM BETWEEN THEM.

—> What are the 1.6 BILLION ROUNDS FOR, JANET...? <—

That question should be coming back into your mind again and again.

Assuming that's true (and I've no doubt it is ...) I can only imagine the thickness of my FBI file for all the nasty things I've said about Obama in email, phone calls, internet posts, etc..

Not a day goes by that I don't curse that worthless SOB up one side of the internet and down the other.....

TBP, this is actually a story that the Washington Pst broke about 3 hours ago.

The Guardians story was on the NSA getting Verizon phone records.

This story is way, way, past that level.

This is a _ _ _ _ ing big deal.

They know how many times you talked to an Islamist terrorist and how many times you talked to your Republican friends or church group each useful pieces of information to this regime. One much more common than the other. Remember who were thought to be potential terrorists.
