Jim McDermott to Megyn Kelly: How can we be sure these IRS tea-party victims are telling the truth?

He’s basically accusing them of making a mountain out of a molehill, emphasizing that no matter how egregiously the IRS behaved, they couldn’t stop the groups from operating without tax exemption. They could still go out there and preach the tea-party gospel; they’d just have to do it, at least for awhile, without the benefit of 501(c)(4) status that liberal groups have comparatively little trouble obtaining. Tough it out, wingnuts. Presumably, if a high-school student applied for federal college loans and the application was held up for discriminatory reasons, McDermott would shrug and say, hey — no one’s stopping the kid from finding the tuition money elsewhere, right? Technically true, but waaay beside the point.

And of course, as Kelly notes, discriminatory processing of tea-party applications does affect how the groups operate. Some groups, fearful of IRS intrusiveness, won’t apply for exemption at all; some people thinking of starting a group might decide not to.

The key bit here, via Twitchy, comes at around 2:40 when Kelly presses McDermott on what one witness said yesterday about losing out on a $30,000 donation because the group couldn’t obtain 501(c)(4) status in timely fashion. McDermott’s reply: How do we know that’s true? Testimony is testimony, but where’s the evidence? And that’s where we are this afternoon, with a top Democrat insisting he’s not blaming the victims while idly wondering if they’re lying to Congress, and whether maybe they should suck it up on the exemption process when liberal groups aren’t being asked to.

Jim McDermott to Megyn Kelly: How can we be sure these IRS tea-party victims US Congressmen are telling the truth?

At least the IRS tea-party victims have not been caught in innumerable, public, on-the-record lies prior to this occasion. How many US Congressmen can make the same claim?

Exactly what I was going to say. If he’s so sure there is doubt of their testimony, bring ‘em up on charges.

Freakin coward.

Also, do his donors pray? To whom? What is the content of their prayers? Do they have websites? Please provide copies of any and all websites, brochures, correspondence, health records, pizza preferences, shoes sizes, etc....whew. No wonder I’m not a liberal. It’s exhausting as well as idiotic!

“Jim McDemott to Megyn Kelly: How can we be sure these IRS tea-party victims are telling the truth?”

Because they are not Washington state congressmen.

I can’t express what contempt I have for this... this...

Anything further I write is likely to be unprintable.

Gee whiz, McDimwit, how about just looking at files? The reams and reams of paperwork doesn’t lie. The dates taking 2+ years to process might lend a clue.

It is amazing that members of congress would protect a guy like this who is detrimental to the country, irrespective of party. When you support or ignore a guy like this, you’re just as bad as he is.

How do we know that McDermott isn't the lowest crawling scum in Washington?

How do we know that McDermott isn't a Communist plant?

How do we know that McDermott isn't an animatronic creature built by Disney for George Soros?

Well, the TEA Party people are almost 100% law abiding citizens that believe in the country, God , and the Constitution.

McDermott is a politician that is used to lying.

Seems pretty simple to be able to make the determination.

The fact that they are not politicians means there is at least a 50-50 chance they are not lying. And if they were politicians you would have to 100 % assume they were lying.
