CENTER CITY - June 5, 2013 (WPVI) -- A building collapsed at the corner of 22nd and Market streets in Center City Philadelphia, trapping a number of a people under the rubble.

The 4-story building, which was connected to a Salvation Army Thrift Store on the southeast corner, collapsed at 10:45 Wednesday morning.

The collapse brought down part of the thrift store and what appears to be converted row homes attached to the back of the building.

Two victims have been taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and three others were transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. All five victims are said to be adults. There is no word at this time on the severity of their injuries.

Emergency crews are on the scene continuing to work feverishly to find survivors.

There is no word on exactly what caused the four-story building to collapse.

Commissioner Ayers initially said the collapse happened at an apartment building, but that has turned out to not be the case.

Philadelphia's "Market-Frankford Elevated Train" runs underground right along Market St. there at 22nd Street (and has for many years), as do several "Subway-Surface" underground trolley cars.    (See Market-Frankford Elevated Train system map here:   Philadelphia's Market-Frankford Elevated Train System Map  --  (The collapse is between the 15th St. & 30th St. stops.)

I don't know if all that underground shaking had anything to do with the collapse or not (following the work that was apparently going on there recently).

I don’t understand it either although I don’t think most folks here on FR mean any disrespect. It seems like folks are so used to jumping on a thread - skimming it - making a snarky comment or political point - and moving onto the next thread.

I don’t believe they pause to consider that someone probably lost a child, a mother, or a father. This sounds like a tragedy and unlike the Texas fertilizer threads where I expressed disbelief (yes - I have done this too) at the ignorance of the owners and local town for allowing a fertilizer plant or storage so close to occupied buildings - I will wait until they finish their search and pray for the families that are hurting tonight.
