CENTER CITY - June 5, 2013 (WPVI) -- A building collapsed at the corner of 22nd and Market streets in Center City Philadelphia, trapping a number of a people under the rubble.
The 4-story building, which was connected to a Salvation Army Thrift Store on the southeast corner, collapsed at 10:45 Wednesday morning.
The collapse brought down part of the thrift store and what appears to be converted row homes attached to the back of the building.
Two victims have been taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and three others were transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. All five victims are said to be adults. There is no word at this time on the severity of their injuries.
Emergency crews are on the scene continuing to work feverishly to find survivors.
There is no word on exactly what caused the four-story building to collapse.
Commissioner Ayers initially said the collapse happened at an apartment building, but that has turned out to not be the case.

The update on the story says that the building was being demolished.
Something collapsed faster than they expected. Always a little dicey when you're taking down an old building, stuff can give way.
I will never understand all the one-liners and joking that accompany threads like this during the early hours of a tragedy involving the possible loss of human life.

We were on a canoe trip in the Adirondacks years and years ago, we were going to climb Ampersand Mountain, we were camped on Norway Island in Middle Saranac Lake, as we were walking the trail between the Lake and Route 3, a 3-4’ diameter tree decided to pick that exact moment to fall over...I have never been so stunned in my life...
You just never really know. Either it’s a close call and we all look back and say, “Whew! that was close!” — or it isn’t, and then our friends visit us in the hospital or the cemetery.

One Sunday afternoon my wife was outside, reading in a vinyl Adirondack chair under our Black Walnut tree. About 20 minutes after going inside the house, a big limb came down directly across the chair and obliterated it.
It looks to me that a column or structural wall was altered in the center of the 4 story building. That movement of support on the left side of that building caused collapse toward the hapless thrift store.
I hope her guardian angel gets a bonus in his paycheck this week.
