100 students ejected from NYC to Atlanta flight for being too rowdy

A group of about 100 high school students traveling from New York to Atlanta were thrown off a flight, along with their chaperones, after the pilot and crew lost patience with some kids who wouldn't sit down and put away their cellphones.

The teenagers, all seniors at the Yeshiva of Flatbush, in Brooklyn, were ordered off the AirTran flight around 6 a.m. Monday as it sat at a gate at LaGuardia Airport.

AirTran's parent company, Southwest Airlines, said in a statement that flight attendants asked passengers several times to take their seats and put their mobile devices away. The airline said that when some didn't comply, the captain repeated the request. When that didn't work, either, the whole group of students was ordered to disembark for safety reasons, the airline said.

The flight was delayed for about 45 minutes while the students filed out of the Boeing 737, which seats about 137 people, leaving the plane mostly empty.

Rabbi Seth Linfield, executive director at Yeshiva of Flatbush, said that administrators were still looking into the matter Tuesday, but that he believed adults on the trip who said the students weren't behaving that badly.

"Preliminarily, it does not appear that the action taken by the flight crew was justified," he said in a statement.

Asked whether he thought 100 teenagers were too many to keep in order on a flight, Linfield said the school has taken similar-size groups before without any problems.

Hey, how 'bout that? Apparently the rare non-Amish teenage mob.

I’ll bet it was justified.

Was the in-flight movie “Soul Plane?”

Typical New Yorkers - Arrogant, self absorbed, stupid, egotistical. It’s all about me. And before anyone says all teenagers are like that, I flew from Atl to Seattle with about 100 teenages from several soccer teams several years ago. When I saw them I thought “Oh Crap.” But as it turned out they didn’t make any excessive noise and behaved quite well.

Today’s youth (the growing majority) know nothing about how to be respectful and understand that the situation is not about their minimal little concerns - but there are others that depend on order to get where they are going...life lesson one taught - I wonder how many of them get it?

I have been on a flight with people standing while the seat belt sign was on and the airplane was taxiing. The pilot hit the brakes and people went flying.

These punkass punks shouldn’t have been given anything other than a reroute and a stern warning. Shame on Airtran for rewarding their bad behavior.

And the offending students should have been the ones taken off and left to get to their destination on their own.

I probably wouldn’t want to be on a flight where 100 of the 137 seats were taken by high school seniors. A real potential for behavior not suitable for air travel.

I’ve recently been delayed because fellow passengers would not put their cellphones away. The other passengers were forced to wait while these bozos texted away. Very rude.

As far as I am concerned, if you are responsible for delaying a flight you need to get the boot.

Perhaps this will be the start of a new practice.

The Captain determines what is justified and what is not.

I'm not sure if FReepers are aware that the students involved were all "ultra-Orthodox" Jews.

This is actually a developing trend in the New York area.

Wonder how much that flight cost Southwest?

“Not misbehaving that badly” doesn’t mean squat if they aren’t putting their cell phones away.

You can buy cell phone zappers for not a lot of money. It’s illegal but surely they can create an exception for flight safety. They can; And don’t call me “Shirley”

Noo Yawkahs. They are the reason that so many people outside the USA have a bad opinion of Americans. I recently went on a two-week European cruise, and whenever I witnessed someone being rude, obnoxious, or petty during one of the tours, it was almost always a Noo Yawkah.

Living in FL, I come across these jerks often. They are always talking about how great Noo Yawk is and how nobody else knows how to do anything right. If I weren’t so polite, I’d ask them why they are here instead of in their beloved Rotten Apple.

Is the trend being ultra orthodox or orthodox behaving badly?

The trend is a combination - that Hasidic communities are becoming so large that their traditional internal administrative solutions are overwhelmed, and conflicts/misunderstandings with outsiders are becoming more frequent and more poorly handled.

The negative externalities of success.
