Treasury IG official compares IRS scandal to Nixon
The Hill's On The Money ^ | June 3, 2013 | Peter Schroeder

The Treasury Inspector General who uncovered the improper targeting of Tea Party groups by the Internal Revenue Service said Monday he was stunned by what his investigation uncovered.

Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), said the targeting at the IRS his probe discovered was "unprecedented," and the closest comparison that came to mind was the targeting of political enemies by the administration of Richard Nixon.

"During the Nixon administration, there were attempts to use the Internal Revenue Services in manners that might be comparable in terms of misusing it. I'm not saying the actions taken here are comparable," he told a House Appropriations subcommittee. "This is unprecedented."

The TIGTA report, released in April, has set off a blizzard of controversy on Capitol Hill, and has led to the resignation or removal of several top IRS officials.

George testified alongside Danny Werfel, who took over the IRS as acting commissioner roughly two weeks ago, following the resignation of the former Acting Commissioner Steven Miller.

Werfel, previously a top official at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), called the activity at the IRS unacceptable, and vowed to conduct a comprehensive review of IRS practices to make sure it never happened again.....

In other words, this is worse.

I posted this elsewhere earlier, but he needs to review his history:

White House Denies Any Role in IRS Audit of Paula Jones

September 16, 1997|From Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The White House denied Monday that it had Paula Corbin Jones singled out for an IRS audit, calling the idea of such retaliation "certifiably crazy."

"It's inconceivable to me," White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry said in response to a question on whether the White House pushed for the IRS investigation after Jones rejected a settlement of her sexual harassment suit against President Clinton.

Bears repeating huh.

Once again, here's a person that can't resist the magnetism of the perceived "worst president ever", when trying to explain what's going on here. Frankly, I don't think Nixon every actually used the IRS to target his foes. If others have a better memory, please mention it.

What Obama and his crew have done here, is way way way over the line. It's striped jump-suit time here, and I think a number of folk are going down for this.

This was a criminal enterprise. And as many visits as the brass were making to the White House, it's going to be very hard to deny any knowledge of this.

improper targeting of Tea Party groups

Better stated as government "targeting people because of their beliefs."

If I'm not mistaken, Nixon tried to misuse the IRS against his political opponents but Obama did use it for that purpose.

It was an article of impeachment against Nixon.

Actually Nixon was charged with "endeavoring to use the IRS".

He was not charged with actually using the IRS.

Hey, give ole Barry a break, this is not unprecedented. This kind of power abuse is common with a number of famous leaders.

Marx, Stalin, Mao, Hitler, Nero...

The list goes on and on.

When Obama is gone we have to clean house.
He has the entire place stacked with rats and czars, right down to the copy boy and the intern.
They all gotta go.

Poor source maybe, Wikipedia, but the point is made ( the joint committee, no doubt with preponderance of Democrats...come to think of it, probably just didn’t want republicans countering with what LBJ and JFK had done).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixon%27s_Enemies_List

“According to Dean, Colson later compiled hundreds of names on a “master list” which changed constantly. On December 20, 1973, the Congressional Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation concluded that people on the “Enemies” list had not been subjected to an unusual number of tax audits.”

See, Nixon had lists, but no actual offenses using those lists.

Obama obviously has lists, and he’s put them to good use.

And yet, he will be compared to a man who hasn’t done what he has.

These Obama administration offenses should be covered sans the name Nixon, and should be described as the worst abuses of our Tax code in our nation’s history.

What has taken place here was a crime that Nixon never committed. Quit using his name you idiotic reporters...

(comments not directed at you here)
