Timbuktu’s slaves liberated as Islamists flee
Washington Post ^ | June 1, 2013 | By Sudarsan Raghavan

Timbuktu, Mali — Her light-skinned master no longer beats her with a camel whip. He no longer makes her work from dawn to night without pay. He fled with his family four months ago, along with the Islamists who briefly ruled this historic city.

“I am free,” said Aminaya Traore, a 50-year-old woman who was born a slave. “I can do whatever I want.”

Across this sand-swept city, hundreds of modern-day slaves are experiencing a sense of liberation, many for the first time. Nearly all the lighter-skinned Tuaregs and Arab Moors who for generations exploited them have fled the city, fearing reprisal attacks for supporting a separatist rebellion that helped ignite the Islamist takeover of Mali’s north last year.

“Under the Islamists, blacks were exploited even more by the pink-skinned people,” said Roukiatou Cisse, a social worker with Temedt, a human rights group, referring to the Tuaregs and Arab Moors. “They told them, ‘We are with the Islamists. We are in power. We are the masters and you are our slaves. We will do what we want.’ ”

“Now, the slaves have profited by the pink-skinned people leaving.”

Apparently black hatred of whites aka pinks knows no bounds there. Screw ‘me. Part of me hopes the islamiacs come back.

They’ve only seen “pinks” as people who have enslaved and abused them. Let a few missionaries from Voice of the Martyrs or Samaritan’s Purse visit them and they might change their point of view.

The word “muslim” not used once in the story. Guess we should be thankful that at least they use the word “Islamist”.

There seems to be a rule emerging that you can criticize “islamists” but not “muslims”. As if islamists are really real muslims.

Freeing of slaves is always a cause for celebration.

The aftermath isn’t always entirely positive, but that doesn’t mean the liberation isn’t a good thing.

And when the illiterate unskilled slaves were freed en masse on one day, this helped them how?

Freedom is its own reward. Bet you’d rebel at even one hour of slavery ~ and that’s a testable hypothesis.

A better question would be: who is feeding the Tuaregs and Moors now that they do not have slaves to get them food?

I suspect that the former slaves will do OK.

Answer: They are no longer owned like a cow or goat. They are human beings again. They may well starve and die. I doubt it, though. Someone who could survive slavery probably has a greater will to live than most who have known only freedom and luxury. But when (not if ... every living thing dies) they die at least they will die free.

Muslim slavery has seldom had much of an economic basis. IOW, slaves were not generally a significant source of income.

Rather, slaves were a way of demonstrating one’s wealth and power. Sort of like a two-legged Ferrari.

Conspicuous consumption, not production.

This was, of course, totally different from plantation slavery in the New World, where slaves were an economic resource.

2.4% of the Malians are Christians, and if Christians work quickly, they could probably double or triple that number, along with teaching the former slaves how to resist being enslaved again. Only 10% or so of the Malians are Tuareg or Arab, so resistance could be very effective.

Islam is hemorrhaging followers in Africa, because black Africans are realizing that Arabs will always treat black Muslims as slaves, but with Christianity there is no slavery.

Therefore the Christian churches of Africa are growing by leaps and bounds: Anglican, Catholic, and Evangelical. And they are the front line against Islam and its deprivations.

Who feeds them? Must they work? Where do they live, find shelter, what do they do for money? How much education do they have?

You are committing common low-information error : Judging a geographically alien society by your own contemporary standards. That usual happens when commenting, scholarly or otherwise, about remote historical events, or remote geographic subcultures.
Context is everything.

Presumably, slaves have no income, save material minimum subsistence provided by th 'masters.' It is impossible to answer those questions. The one about education is particularly naïve in the cruelty inherent in the question.

Normally, the answers to those questions (in our sheltered universe) would center around the society at large, but in this instance, the society at large, absent the muslims would be only marginally different. Blacks have always enslaved other blacks as far a history can infer (ignoring the nuts who channel presumed totally disappeared written 'history' ironically centered around Timbuktu.)

American Christian missionaries in many parts of Africa paved the way for later U.S. diplomatic missions.

Tuaregs light skinned? All relative, I guess.

And no one in the media or the political world will take the lesson here so clearly taught about Moslems and slavery or the one about Moslems and racial imperialism.

VW certainly did. National Geographic once did a long colorful ticle about the Tuaregs and the population that serves them. NatG couldn’t quite get around to calling those serving folks “slaves” though, but it was apparent that slavery is the relationship.

The Moors in Spain and North Africa are/were Berbers, not Arabs. They run the whole gamut of skin tones and there ire blue eyes and light hair among them. Tuaregs tend to a bluish skin tone because of the densely dyed blue robes they wear. The dye rubs off and stains their skin. There are certain linguistic and orthographic characteristics that have been linked by some to the North European population. The Tuaregs could almost be described as Vikings on Camels by their habits and methods of raiding and trade.
