LOS ANGELES (AP) — Protesters rallied in dozens of cities Saturday as part of a global protest against seed giant Monsanto and the genetically modified food it produces, organizers said.

Organizers said "March Against Monsanto" protests were held in 52 countries and 436 cities, including Los Angeles where demonstrators waved signs that read "Real Food 4 Real People" and "Label GMOs, It's Our Right to Know."

… The U.S. Senate this week overwhelmingly rejected a bill that would allow states to require labeling of genetically modified foods.

... if GM seeds are no big deal then why all the fuss against labeling? Why not let consumers make their own choice? Why spend nearly $6 million on lobbying for the "Monsanto Protection Act,"

I am extremely Conservative. Monsanto is using government power to abuse the Capitalist system.

I hope that GMO labeling moves forward. Let the marketplace decide, not D.C.

Crony Capitalism used to game the system. This is as far from capitalism and as far from what the founders intended as can be. Did you know that Monsanto has strong ties to Obama?

...........................

Meet a few of the games’ players

MICHAEL TAYLOR

FDA – Monsanto – FDA – USDA – Monsanto – FDA – FDA

Michael Taylor was most recently appointed by Barack Obama to be the ‘Senior Advisor’ to the Commisioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration. His previous post was also under Obama as the Deputy Commissioner for Foods (Food Safety Czar) at the FDA. He was also put in charge of the FDA under Bill Clinton where he approved Monsanto’s rBGH. Taylor worked with Monsanto by establishing and leading a ‘food and drug law practice’ as well as later serving as Vice President for Public Policy at Monsanto. He also had a stint with the United States Department of Agriculture. Michael Taylor’s back and forth positions with Monsanto, the FDA, and the USDA over the course of nearly three decades is a perfect example of how big government and big business operate.

ISLAM SIDDIQUI

USDA – CropLife(Monsanto) – USDC – CropLife(Monsanto) – USTR

An Obama recess appointment, Mr. Siddiqui is the Chief Agricultural Negotiator in the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR). He also served as Vice President for Science and Regulatory Affairs at CropLife America and lobbied for that same federation earlier in his career (CropLife America represents Monsanto among others). Siddiqui is a big supporter of GMO’s and as Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs at the USDA, he oversaw the release standards permitting both irradiated and GMO foods be labeled as organic.

ROGER BEACHY

Founding president of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, which is a de facto Monsanto non-profit research center. Appointed by Obama to direct the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), which is an agency of the USDA. This puts Mr. Beachy, unconfirmed by the public and unelected, in charge of hundreds of millions of dollars for the country’s agricultural research policy.

TOM VILSACK

Mr. Vilsack serves as the United States Secretary of Agriculture for the Obama Administration. Both as Iowa State Senator and Governor, Vilsack has shown his support for GMOs as well as CAFOs, concentrated animal feeding operations (factory farms). He even went so far as to support legislation that would prevent local governments from regulating CAFOs, and later, the local’s regulation of genetically engineered seeds. There was also controversy surrounding Vilsack’s travels via Monsanto corporate jet. Vilsack founded the Governor’s Biotechnology Partnership, and also was named governor of the year by the Biotechnology Industry Organization. As governor of Iowa, he was a big proponent of the use of GMO corn in the production of ethanol. Prior to being appointed Secretary of Agriculture, Vilsack worked as an ‘of-counsel’ lawyer for Dorsey & Whitney.

Are you beginning to see the picture? Big agri business has its tentacles all throughout big government and vice versa. As those in control jump from one ship to the other, kickbacks, favors, and even employment opportunities are given while favorable laws are paid in turn. The result is an uneven playing field, and ultimately, the increased likelihood that your local farmer will be put out of business.

So when you see legislation that promotes “public health” or “food safety” you better band against it because it pretty much ensures you that both will be threatened, along with your basic liberties.

Hundreds passed us yesterday. The sad thing about it, is all of the very young children marching and chanting. Just shook my head...

As it was, we were at a Corvette Car Show and they came by chanting "No More GTO's".

OMG! A big corporation is using big government!

My solution is to shrink government, a lot.

Not to team up with ignorant liberals to spread ignorance.

Here is one link -http://www.newsmax.com/TheWire/tea-party-monsanto-protection-act-opposition/2013/04/04/id/497795

The TeaParty opposition to GMO is more opposition to the fascist protection that the bill gives Monsanto. Liberals oppose the bill because it will allow the government to give special growing rights to Monsanto on farm lands that the left does not want farmed.

The left has been working for years to shut down much of the farm land in the west, now the Obama administration comes along and teams up with Monsanto, to open up that farmland to growing Monsanto crops, on the condition that the crops be shipped to Asia via a new port that the government is building in Northwest WA, as a coal port. The developers say that coal was the only way to get the port built and get the support that it needed, but GMO grain is the real raison d’etre. China even told the developers that they would not be interested in the coal by the time that the terminal is built, but would buy all the grain and soy beans that they could ship.

Sorry, I should have said “Investigate”.

April 1, 2013) The Monsanto Protection Act, which President Obama signed into law this week, will strip judges of their constitutional mandate to protect consumer rights and the environment, while opening up the floodgates for the planting of new untested genetically engineered crops, endangering farmers, consumers and the environment. The result is that GMO crops will be able to evade any serious scientific or regulatory review.

Seems they want a rigged system in government, regarding oversight

Monsanto's growth hormones for cows have been approved by Michael Taylor, US FDA deputy commissioner--Taylor was a former lawyer for the Monsanto corporation for seven years. This was after Margaret Miller, a former Monsanto employee, oversaw a report on the hormones' safety and then took a job at the FDA where she approved her own report.

will strip judges of their constitutional mandate to protect consumer rights and the environment,

It's true, liberal judges won't be able to shut down billions worth of crops, without any evidence.

The result is that GMO crops will be able to evade any serious scientific or regulatory review.

Prove it. Nation of Change might not be the best source for a noob to post on FR. Try again?

I thought Conservatives were supposed to be for more local control and less top-down control.

Here's what libertarians believe conservatives support. However, what they list is closer to the philosophy of neos rather than the traditional Reagan conservatives, IMO.

Conservatives have been the driving force behind the recent protests against corporate capitalism, for example.

And just because you don't believe the Founders built a wall between Church and State doesn't mean you want to force-feed people the Eucharist.

I saved and sent this “Nation of Change” article to my local liberal rag newspaper who are Obama worshipers. The reaction was very negative towards Obama and was proof that many libs are waking up to his antics.

I agree.

There has been a big split in “Conservative”, which if you’ve been at FR for a long time like I have you watched as it happened.

Because of this anyone can say anything they like about what “conservative believe”.
