LOS ANGELES (AP) Protesters rallied in dozens of cities Saturday as part of a global protest against seed giant Monsanto and the genetically modified food it produces, organizers said.
Organizers said "March Against Monsanto" protests were held in 52 countries and 436 cities, including Los Angeles where demonstrators waved signs that read "Real Food 4 Real People" and "Label GMOs, It's Our Right to Know."
The U.S. Senate this week overwhelmingly rejected a bill that would allow states to require labeling of genetically modified foods.

But the same folks don’t have a problem using food for fuel.
Obviously they’ve been drinking the GM kool aid for years already.
21st Century No-nothings.
Monsanto.....or at least its friends, recently managed to have an outrageous rider slipped into the 587-page funding bill Congress sent to President Obama.
The rider essentially prohibits the Department of Agriculture from stopping production of any genetically engineered crop once its in the ground, even if there is evidence that it is harmful.
Thats a pre-emptive Congressional override of the judicial system, since it is the courts that are most likely to ask the U.S.D.A. to halt planting or harvest of a particular crop.
Chemical’s the new food group.
They must not be the no/low info voters we’ve heard so much about. Apparently they are the wrong info voters.
What does the nobility (Husseins, etc.) care? Apparently, when they’re not shoveling junk food into their troughs, they have their slaves prepare only organic food.
Shouldn't you be marching with the rest of the clowns?
Amazing how the left has demonized Monsanto. There are scores, probably hundreds, of companies developing GM seeds around the world. Demonizing just one of them is classic Alinskyism in action.
I would have hoped that most people here would know better.
The same people favor the biggest federal government possible ... without which Monsanto, ADM and others would not exist because they get so many subsidies and favored tax status, exclusions from lawsuits, etc.
Yep. They would not be able to be such a huge company and monopolize the market without big federal government bully protection from competition.
The words “Genetically Modified” terrify ignorant leftists....they haven’t a clue.
What is their favored tax status?
What makes you think they can't be sued?
...Not only GMO's, but Monsanto has the 'terminator seed'. This seed produces a plant with no viable seed to reuse for the following year. This seed is sold primarily in 3rd work regions desperate for food. AND - Here in the USA Monsanto patrols the heartland looking for farmers trying to reuse the seed they bought. Farmers are hit heavy with fines if they save seed for the next year. Monsanto has bought many small seed companies and now controls a large market share of our food supply. Follow their rules, or pay
... Monsanto seeds require the application of the Round-up chemicals to activate features; this way farmers have to buy the seeds AND the chemicals to spray on them!
... if GM seeds are no big deal then why all the fuss against labeling? Why not let consumers make their own choice? Why spend nearly $6 million on lobbying for the "Monsanto Protection Act," which was written anonymously, passed in secret, and allows Monsanto to keep selling genetically engineered seeds even if a federal court says they may pose a health risk?..
Monsanto has bought worldwide influence to prevent anyone from questioning them in a legal forum.
If they are so proud of their gmo crops, why are they afraid to label it in stores?
Let everyone who wants to eat gmo crops do so knowingly. Let everyone who wants to avoid eating gmo crops have the knowledge to do so. Seems fair.
Around here, an Amish farmer threw some gmo corn out by the edge of the woods and even the dear won’t eat it... If they don’t want it, I sure don’t.
I've had this discussion on here before. The answer was, essentially, "Adding a small label that says 'GMO' would be far too burdensome on companies and drive them out of business."
So now we know.
I am very uncomfortable allowing increased centralization and control of food supplies by uber-corporations.
Food supplies like politics is best controlled at the local level.
A liberal judge decides they may pose a risk?
Sounds like a good reason to destroy billions of dollars in value.
Ethanol subsides for a start. Monsanto reaps huge benefits from subsides to corn farming for ethanol production. There is much more. The new bill in Congress proposes protection from lawsuits.
..Whole Foods says there is growing demand for products that don't use GMOs, with sales of products with a "Non-GMO" verification label spiking between 15 percent and 30 percent.
Exactly. This should be a Conservative issue ... if more conservatives would get their heads out about what centralization of EVERYTHING means.
Smaller is better. More local is better.
I thought Conservatives were supposed to be for more local control and less top-down control.
Centrally controlled food production should terrify Conservatives.
Oh please. Ethanol subsidies don't give Monsanto any taxpayer funds. You're really stretching. Any more realistic proof of your claim?
There is much more.
I'll wait for your proof.
The new bill in Congress proposes protection from lawsuits.
Can you be more specific in the protection you think they get?
“They would rather let Africans and Asians starve then modify food. Sometimes I wonder if starvation isn’t the real left wing agenda.”
Exactly what I was thinking.
I don’t think that is quite right. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a Monsanto supporter.
The GMO foods are resistant to the weed killer in Round-UP. In other words, it makes it possible to spray the weeds and not kill the crop along with the weeds. The problem is that no one really believes that Round-Up is not harmful to humans.
GMO foods enable farmers to grow more crops on less land. There is a huge push to open up land in the Pacific Northwest to growing grain and soybeans to ship to China, land which has been banned from growing anything by the federal government. GMO crops are the back-up crop for some of those new “coal” terminals that the Obama administration is pushing, with the support of of Republicans and TeaParty members. According to some of the representatives of the Gateway Pacific Terminal (Goldman Sachs), the Chinese have told them that they don’t want our sub-bituminous coal, they want grain and soy beans. (but coal is the product that earns the support of the Republicans).
Why are you here posting?
Shouldn’t you be marching with the rest of the clowns?
Hey, I like that solution! There’s nothing to stop companies from labeling their food NON-GMO.
I didn’t see any mention of the fact that the TeaParty was the original backer of this anti-Monsanto demonstration. I heard this because the local left, which has been opposing GMO foods for a long time, backed out of the local event when they found out that it was connected to the TeaParty.
Teach me. Use facts, not feelings.
So you are for ethanol subsidies?
Why should any industry get Federal subsidies?
Why does Monsanto need Federal laws to protect it from competition. If it has such great products, then why can’t they stand on their own?
That’s interesting (and encouraging) about the tea party opposition to Monsanto. Got any links to this?
Once they control all the seeds they control the entire food producion chain. Africans and Asians would be at their mercy if they didn’t want to starve.
Slavery is coming back.
Centrally controlled food production should terrify Conservatives.
You’re right. But some conservatives see some lefties protesting and automatically shut their minds.
Not now, not ever, never.
You said Monsanto couldn't survive without the subsidies they get. They were around a long time before the idiot politicians gave us these idiotic ethanol subsidies.
Why should any industry get Federal subsidies?
I agree, get rid of them. What does that have to do with your claim about Monsanto.
Why does Monsanto need Federal laws to protect it from competition.
You need to be more specific. What law protects them from competition?
I don’t shut my mind when I see ignorant conservatives protesting alongside ignorant liberals.
It’s easy to demonstrate against GMO foods when you’re a low information luddite who has never been hungry a day in your life or watched family members die of starvation.
Great idea! Should I read silly articles like you?
I am extremely Conservative. Monsanto is using government power to abuse the Capitalist system.
I hope that GMO labeling moves forward. Let the marketplace decide, not D.C.
Meet a few of the games players
Michael Taylor was most recently appointed by Barack Obama to be the Senior Advisor to the Commisioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration. His previous post was also under Obama as the Deputy Commissioner for Foods (Food Safety Czar) at the FDA. He was also put in charge of the FDA under Bill Clinton where he approved Monsantos rBGH. Taylor worked with Monsanto by establishing and leading a food and drug law practice as well as later serving as Vice President for Public Policy at Monsanto. He also had a stint with the United States Department of Agriculture. Michael Taylors back and forth positions with Monsanto, the FDA, and the USDA over the course of nearly three decades is a perfect example of how big government and big business operate.
An Obama recess appointment, Mr. Siddiqui is the Chief Agricultural Negotiator in the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR). He also served as Vice President for Science and Regulatory Affairs at CropLife America and lobbied for that same federation earlier in his career (CropLife America represents Monsanto among others). Siddiqui is a big supporter of GMOs and as Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs at the USDA, he oversaw the release standards permitting both irradiated and GMO foods be labeled as organic.
Founding president of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, which is a de facto Monsanto non-profit research center. Appointed by Obama to direct the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), which is an agency of the USDA. This puts Mr. Beachy, unconfirmed by the public and unelected, in charge of hundreds of millions of dollars for the countrys agricultural research policy.
Mr. Vilsack serves as the United States Secretary of Agriculture for the Obama Administration. Both as Iowa State Senator and Governor, Vilsack has shown his support for GMOs as well as CAFOs, concentrated animal feeding operations (factory farms). He even went so far as to support legislation that would prevent local governments from regulating CAFOs, and later, the locals regulation of genetically engineered seeds. There was also controversy surrounding Vilsacks travels via Monsanto corporate jet. Vilsack founded the Governors Biotechnology Partnership, and also was named governor of the year by the Biotechnology Industry Organization. As governor of Iowa, he was a big proponent of the use of GMO corn in the production of ethanol. Prior to being appointed Secretary of Agriculture, Vilsack worked as an of-counsel lawyer for Dorsey & Whitney.
Are you beginning to see the picture? Big agri business has its tentacles all throughout big government and vice versa. As those in control jump from one ship to the other, kickbacks, favors, and even employment opportunities are given while favorable laws are paid in turn. The result is an uneven playing field, and ultimately, the increased likelihood that your local farmer will be put out of business.
So when you see legislation that promotes public health or food safety you better band against it because it pretty much ensures you that both will be threatened, along with your basic liberties.
Obama has to s of Monsanto people in his admn. Hope tha helps.
Somewhere, Dr. Norman Borlaug is laughing at these people.
Are you against irradiated foods?
As it was, we were at a Corvette Car Show and they came by chanting "No More GTO's".
My solution is to shrink government, a lot.
Not to team up with ignorant liberals to spread ignorance.
Thats exactly right, this should not be political thing, I join my smelly brothers and sisters on the left in opposition to all GMO, s
No kidding. To these idiots, starvation is better than technology.
