Death Toll Rises in India Maoist Attack
Voice of America ^ | 26 May 2013 | anon

The death toll from an attack on Indian politicians by Maoist rebels has risen to 23, a day after the rebels fired at a convoy of cars carrying local Congress Party leaders in eastern India.

Suspected insurgents fired at the vehicles Saturday in the Sukma area of Chhattisgarh state. Dozens of people were wounded in the attack.

Local reports say some senior party leaders were among those killed. The Associated Press reported Sunday that several more bodies were found near the scene of the crash Sunday, including those of a party leader and his son who had been believed kidnapped.

Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi has condemned what she called an attack on India's democratic values. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has vowed that the government would take firm action against those responsible for the attack.

The rebels have been fighting the central government for more than four decades, demanding land and jobs for tenant farmers and the poor.

Currently, there are 28 dead, and this figure may rise. Those killed include several Indian politicians.

Political violence works. To stop it from working you must administer more violence; selectively and with precision. Generally, those who turn to violence do so because they are too weak to win by any other means.

Maoist Rebels?

Who are they?

I am guessing they are communist followers of Mao.

Is China somehow involved with training or supplies?

demanding land and jobs for tenant farmers and the poor.

In all those years, the Maoists never figured it out. On one hand, it is quite possible they are being abused and taken advantage of by large landowners. On the other hand, in what world do these people think the state would capitulate to demands backed by violence?

It is a losing strategy...

Let’s make sure we get the right information here: These are not “rebels”. They are maoist/communist guerillas. And they’re not really fighting for land for the poor. That may be what they say, but that’s just their convenient fig leaf for attacking the government. Their real purpose is to stage an insurgency and attempt the overthrow of the legitimate Indian government through force, either direct force or the threat of force, and to replace it with an openly-communist government likely closely aligned with the Chinese.

Not to be flippant, but the world in which they think this works is just across the border from this part of India in Nepal, where the Maoist rebels recently won.

For the record, I attended a CCP press conference 3 years ago, and an Indian reporter asked if today’s CCP endorsed Maoists in India. The CCP official said no, and when the reporter asked why the CCP can’t support a group calling themselves Maoists and who support Marxist ideology, the CCP official stated that the CCP is trying to implement reforms and now focus more on pragmatism over ideology. He pointed out that the Marxist ideology revolution had already ended in China and the new era is for reforms. His answer should not be considered 100% accurate, but it at least shows the mindsets of some CCP officials.

“The rebels have been fighting the central government for more than four decades, demanding land and jobs for tenant farmers and the poor.”

But as with all things socialist (aka: “liberal”, more recently “progressive”), it is never about the immediate thing, there is always some future thing that is the real goal.

If you give in to these demands they will quickly be back with bigger demands.

Yet, these paradises on earth - N Korea, Cuba, Nepal, Venezuela, etc. - are just a place to visit for our liberals. If it’s really what they want and it’s really so great, why not pick up stakes and move there permanently.

Enjoy paradise, no?

What they would see in those countries is extreme poverty, dirt, and suffering. But, what they’d also see is a political class living like the Obama’s being propped up by slaves. That’s why the informed commies dig communism, the rest of the commies are just useful idiot trust-funders.

“Too weak to win.... Kind of like conservatives in this country.”

There are many more conservatives than liberals. But conservatives refuse to vote for the (admitidly hideous) Mitt Romneys and Juan McCains; preferring instead to “punish” the GOP for not giving them Ronal Reagan. But a Juan McCain might have given us President Palin and a Mitt Romney might have given us Paul Ryan. Certainly, neither of them would have given us an anti-American Muslim president.
