The US attorney general has acknowledged four US citizens were killed in drone strikes since 2011.
The US specifically targeted and killed Anwar al-Awlaki, Eric Holder wrote in a letter to the Senate judiciary panel.
Awlaki's 16-year-old son Abdulrahman, Samir Khan and Jude Mohammad were "not specifically targeted by the US".
The disclosure of the killings in Yemen and Pakistan marks the first formal public acknowledgement of the US citizen deaths in drone strikes.
"The president has directed me to disclose certain information that until now has been properly classified," Mr Holder wrote.
'Continuing threat' America's top law enforcement official defended the killing of Awlaki, whom he described as a "senior operational leader" of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
Mr Holder said Awlaki was "intimately involved in detailed planning and putting in place plots against US persons".
Mr Holder added officials "appropriately concluded that [Awlaki] posed a continuing and imminent threat" to the US.
Awlaki, an al-Qaeda suspect born in the US state of New Mexico, was killed by an unmanned plane in Yemen September 2011. US officials announced his death but did not officially reveal he was killed by a drone...

Remember Nidal Malik Hasan...you know the Fort Hood shooter, who was a ‘lone wolf’ and wasn’t at all involved with terrorists...
Here is what Wikipedia has to say about the linkage between him and Al Awlaki:
“Fort Hood shootings suspect Nidal Malik Hasan was investigated by the FBI after intelligence agencies intercepted at least 18 e-mails between him and al-Awlaki between December 2008 and June 2009...Hasan also asked al-Awlaki when jihad is appropriate, and whether it is permissible if innocents are killed in a suicide attack... In the months before the attacks, Hasan increased his contacts with al-Awlaki to discuss how to transfer funds abroad without coming to the attention of law authorities.”
So this is all communication between Al-Awlaki and Hasan BEFORE he went on a shooting spree at FT Hood. And, even though the FBI had ALREADY intercepted all these incriminating e-mails...the official government line was ‘lone wolf’, completely pretending Al-Awlaki didn’t exist.
All they had to do next was...well...make sure he didn’t exist and could never contradict the official ‘line’ about Hasan.
The BBC must be so proud of what London has become.
I don’t think they were going to serve a subpoena on him.

As much that I believe this admin is capable of such diversion, I’m thinking the number of different people involved in such a charade would make it very risky to trust everyone to keep quiet. Money talks and a lot of money makes more noise.

We as a nation, as free persons, need to address the defense our very lives against this maniac. The idea that “capture is not feasible” when our military knows where suspects are down to the millimeter is ludicrous. America goes where it wants and kidnaps or kills who it wants. And that includes the lives of those who are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty. I give you Bin Laden’s life/death - the greatest intelligence failure of all time. This president (no caps) is nothing more than a pimp for the plutocracy. Professor of constitutional law? More like professor of constitutional outlaws. He makes Bush the Lesser look like a thumb sucking school boy. Our government tried to impeach Clinton for getting a blow-job on his big desk. Any guesses if these serial murders are going to generate a call for impeachment?
IMO, there’s a story behind every story connected with this admin.

Treasury Targets al-Qa’ida Leader with Ties to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Treasury today designated Anwar al-Aulaqi, a key leader for al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), a Yemen-based terrorist group. Aulaqi was designated pursuant to Executive Order 13224 for supporting acts of terrorism and for acting for or on behalf of AQAP. Since its inception in January 2009, AQAP has claimed responsibility for numerous terrorist attacks against Saudi, Korean, Yemeni and U.S. targets. Executive Order 13224 freezes any assets Aulaqi has under U.S. jurisdiction and prohibits U.S. persons from engaging in any transactions with him.
“Anwar al-Aulaqi has proven that he is extraordinarily dangerous, committed to carrying out deadly attacks on Americans and others worldwide,” said Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Stuart Levey. “He has involved himself in every aspect of the supply chain of terrorism — fundraising for terrorist groups, recruiting and training operatives, and planning and ordering attacks on innocents.”
Aulaqi has pledged an oath of loyalty to AQAP emir, Nasir al-Wahishi, and plays a major role in setting the strategic direction for AQAP. Aulaqi has also recruited individuals to join AQAP, facilitated training at camps in Yemen in support of acts of terrorism, and helped focus AQAP’s attention on planning attacks on U.S. interests.
Since late 2009, Aulaqi has taken on an increasingly operational role in the group, including preparing Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who attempted to detonate an explosive device aboard a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day 2009, for his operation. In November 2009, while in Yemen, Abdulmutallab swore allegiance to the emir of AQAP and shortly thereafter received instructions from Aulaqi to detonate an explosive device aboard a U.S. airplane over U.S. airspace. After receiving this direction from Aulaqi, Abdulmutallab obtained the explosive device he used in the attempted Christmas Day attack.
Aulaqi was imprisoned in Yemen in 2006 on charges of kidnapping for ransom and being involved in an al-Qa’ida plot to kidnap a U.S. official but was released from jail in December 2007 and subsequently went into hiding in Yemen.
“Aulaqi has sought to encourage his supporters to provide money for terrorist causes. Those who provide material support to Aulaqi or AQAP violate sanctions and expose themselves to serious consequences,” continued Levey.
Today’s action supports the international effort to degrade AQAP’s capabilities to execute violent attacks and to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat its financial and support networks. The U.S. Government will continue to work with allies to identify and take action against persons acting for or on behalf of, or providing financial and other prohibited support to, Aulaqi and AQAP.

A man accused of being part of a terrorist cell in the Triangle has been linked to what U.S. counter-terrorism officials have called a credible but unconfirmed al-Qaida threat to set off a car bomb on bridges or tunnels in New York City or Washington.
The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Jude Kenan Mohammad is among three al-Qaida leaders that investigators believe pose a particular threat because they have lived in the U.S.
Mohammad, 22, dropped out of Fuquay-Varina High School in 2006 and left the U.S. two years later to visit Pakistan, his father’s homeland.
A federal grand jury indicted him and seven other Triangle men in 2009 on charges that they conspired to carry out terrorist activities around the world. Two of the men have pleaded guilty, and the trial of four others is set for Sept. 19 in New Bern.
Federal authorities have never arrested Mohammad in the case, saying that they believe he has been in Pakistan since the indictment was issued.
