SNIPPET: “On October 17, 2013, the Somali Al-Qaeda-affiliated group Al-Shabab Al-Mujahideen released an hour long video titled “Woolwich Attack: It’s an Eye for an Eye.” The video is about the May 22, 2013, Woolwich (London) attack in which British soldier Lee Rigby was murdered in daylight by two men. In the video, Al-Shabab portrays the attack as a logical response to the U.K.’s crimes against Muslims around the world. Al-Shabab urges Muslims living in the West to follow the footsteps of the Woolwich attack perpetrators, as well as the perpetrators of other attacks in the West, such as Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter; Faisal Shahzad, the Times Square bomber; and Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalab, the “Underwear Bomber.” The video also features several British Muslims from different ethnic backgrounds who traveled to Somalia and trained and fought alongside Al-Shabab.”

“Terrorist Killed British Soldier to ‘Make it to Paradise’”

SNIPPET: “Michael Adebolajo is one of the two men charged with hacking British soldier Lee Rigby to death in a brutal, daylight attack in London last May. He testified Monday, telling the court he did kill Rigby.

While Islamist groups and even the United States government argue religion should not be part of the conversation when it comes to terrorist attacks, Adebolajo – a convert to Islam – made it clear it was the driving force behind his actions.

“My religion is everything,” he said. “When I came to Islam I realised that... real success is not just what you can acquire, but really is if you make it to paradise, because then you can relax.”

‘To fight Jihad for the sake of Allah, it’s not something that is to be taken lightly, fun or something like this,” Adebolajo said.

That is consistent with what he said moments after Rigby’s murder. “But we are forced by the Qur’an, in Sura At-Tawba, through many ayah in the Qu’ran, we must fight them as they fight us,” he said, still carrying the meat cleaver, his hands covered in Rigby’s blood.”

“Lee Rigby murder trial: Michael Adebolajo ‘a soldier of Allah’”

SNIPPET: “A man has admitted killing soldier Lee Rigby but said it was not murder because “I am a soldier of Allah” and “this is a war”.

Michael Adebolajo, 28, described the killing as a “military operation”.

He also told the Old Bailey he loved extremist network al-Qaeda.”

SNIPPET: “But his message was the same as the one he asked people to record at the scene of the killing: he was a Muslim soldier at war - and in his mind that amounts to a defence to the charge of murder.”

SNIPPET: “Earlier the court heard Mr Adebolajo, from Romford, east London, give his name as Mujaahid Abu Hamza and confirm he was married with six children, including a seven-year-old boy and a baby who was four days old on the day of the incident.”

SNIPPET: “When he was later asked what his defence to the charge of murder was, he said: “I am a soldier. I’m a soldier of Allah”.

He continued: “I understand that some people might not recognise this because we do not wear fatigues and we do not go to the Brecon Beacons and train and this sort of thing. But we are still soldiers in the sight of Allah as a mujahid.

“This is all that matters, if Allah considers me a soldier, then I am a soldier.””

SNIPPET: “The defendant told the court that he had tried to travel to Somalia in 2010 but was captured in Kenya and returned to the UK.”

SNIPPET: “London (AFP) - A Muslim extremist was jailed for life and his accomplice for 45 years on Wednesday for hacking British soldier Lee Rigby to death on a London street in a “terrorist” killing that shocked the nation.

SNIPPET: “The convicted killers claimed they were “soldiers of Islam” and therefore justified in their actions.

The Rigby murder stunned Britain and sparked a rise in community tensions, with several mosques attacked by arsonists. British Muslim leaders deplored the killing.

The brutal daylight attack also raised questions for British intelligence agencies as Adebolajo was known to the security services, having been arrested in Kenya in 2010 and deported.

Sweeney had held off passing sentence in December because the European Court of Human Rights last year condemned the punishment of whole-life terms as a violation of prisoners’ rights, causing the Court of Appeal to launch their review.”
