Rand Paul: My colleagues just voted to arm the allies of al Qaeda

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) blasted members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Tuesday, which voted overwhelmingly to arm elements of the Syrian opposition in a bill co-sponsored by Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN). "This is an important moment," Paul said, addressing his Senate colleagues. "You will be funding, today, the allies of al Qaeda. It's an irony you cannot overcome."

The legislation, which would authorize the shipment of arms and military training to rebels "that have gone through a thorough vetting process," passed in a bipartisan 15-3 vote. Paul offered an amendment that would strike the bill's weapons provision, but it was rejected along with another Paul amendment ruling out the authorization of the use of military force in Syria. (Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy was the only senator to join Paul in support of the weapons amendment.)

Rand Paul is right. The best thing for the US to do is to let the Arabs fight their own battles and we stay out of it. When Muslims fight each other they have less energy to fight outsiders. But of course Obama can’t help himself, he needs to throw a hail mary pass and he thinks the Syria card can rescue him. Sen. McCain and Sen. Graham are not helping by encouraging Hussein Obama to utilize this strategy.

Muslims will kill Muslims whether we send them money or not.

It’s stupid foreign policy to assist those who hate you and war on you to take over the reins of power in any nation.

You are exactly right. I was not very articulate in my comment. I had to dash out the door to pick up my daughter from Civil Air Patrol, so I just pushed "Post" without elaborating on what could be achieved for free.

I demand an immediate medical examination of all United States Senators! The Democrats cried about the Contras in Nicaragua for years, and now they are OK with intervening in Syria? This makes no sense at all except for mass insanity in the Senate.....or blackmail. And I mean blackmail of our country. What was the threat? They’d shoot down our airliners? What the hell happened in the Middle East?

Obama has to get rid of the MPADS from Benghazi somehow. This is a profit making venture and probably that is what sold the RINOs on it. RINOs are not smart and they are not principled. They can’t think two steps ahead about unintended consequences like shooting down our airliners.

“The civil war is a quagmire that we didn’t start, why jump right into the middle of it?”

Americans are the biggest fools in history.

Hussein Obama’s ARAB SPRING is about overthrowing governments and replacing them with Muslim terrorist run governments.

Egypt went well with Hussein’s Muslim brotherhood in power.

Libya, Iraq and Syria are all works in progress. Hussein is supplying weapons to Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups.

Most Americans are waiting for the press to tell them the truth. But the government tells the press what to say and then the parrots repeat the lies.

Don’t believe it? The US Government has been lying to you for decades, and it’s done with ease.

Republicans did not overthrow the government in Libya. That was the Democrat Obama administration.

What's up with the republican party in Tennessee?

It has a lot of pluses and I'll start to think seriously about the state, but then the Governor or Corker or Lamar will sing, say or do something that even a NE progressive would admire.

I have to say that no state is perfect. I like the South. Half of my family is from the South. But there are things messed up even in southern states. MD is hardcore blue. VA is purple. NC is confused. SC has Lindsey. FL isn’t a southern state. AL has no clue when it comes to the 2a. I could go on. The trick is to find a state that has no major cities. There are very few of those states in the country.

Coordinates which days he's going to play hero as well. One week he's relentlessly filibustering to "save the Republic", the next week it's "I personally don't agree with President Obama's nominee, but I will vote for him anyway because the President has the right to name who he wants"

UN Envoy Asks Iran to Continue Rigid Efforts to Help Settle Syrian Crisis

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov revealed on Sunday that he had discussed Iran’s involvement in a conference to resolve the crisis in Syria, when he met his US counterpart John Kerry early in May, stressing that the conference cannot succeed without Iran’s participation.

The Russians and Americans agreed during Kerry’s visit to Moscow to set up a conference of international players to end the crisis in Syria. Moscow wants to involve all the nations which took part in the Geneva conference on Syria, and says without Iran’s participation the conference cannot succeed.

If we wanted to arm secularist, or at the very least non-salafi opposition to Assad, that moment passed months ago.

The Free Syrian Army is being cannibalized by the Al-Nursa Front, who’s doing the heavy lifting now.

The civil war is a quagmire that we didn’t start, why jump right into the middle of it?

This is an excellent point.

Bashar al-Assad is enormously evil; and his removal from office would surely discomfit Iran and Russia (which, I believe, would be a good thing).

But if an al-Qaeda faction should replace him--and it now looks as if that very well may be the case--I am not at all sure that this would represent an improvement.

In short, it is a bit like the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s: One wishes that both sides could lose...
