Two senior White House aides knew weeks ago that a probe of the Internal Revenue Service had found that the U.S. tax agency had inappropriately targeted conservative groups, but did not tell President Barack Obama, a White House spokesman said on Monday.
A Treasury Department official informed White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler on April 24 about the preliminary findings of a report that would fuel the latest in a series of scandals to confront Obama at the start of his second term.
The report was issued by a Treasury inspector general on May 14, four days after an IRS official had acknowledged, and apologized for, the agency's targeting of conservative groups with names such as "Tea Party" and "Patriots" that had applied for tax-exempt status.
Soon after learning of the report's preliminary findings, Ruemmler briefed White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough and some other senior staff members, White House spokesman Jay Carney told a regular news briefing. Ruemmler chose not to inform Obama about the findings to avoid any appearance that he had any role in shaping the report - a role the president would not have taken anyway, Carney said.
As a result, said Carney, Obama did not learn of the findings until they were announced last week - as the president has himself stated.
Monday's disclosures revealed more about the inner workings of the White House than they did about the IRS scandal, which revolves around questions such as who imposed the inappropriate targeting by IRS employees in the agency's office in Cincinnati, Ohio, and whether IRS officials misled Congress last year about whether they knew that targeting was going on.

Reuters loses even more credibility by reporting “straight-faced” that the President knew nothing because no one bothered to clue him in. Right.
But did he tell Valerie? If he told her, then he told Obama.
Corrupt Chicago politics from the top down!!
Nobody knows anything and if someone talks they won’t see the next sunshine!
Yea but Nixon had his own office bugged & the existence of the tapes was made known. It would take a witness to come forward to nail O himself on this. I don’t see it happening.
“So obammy will fire them for incompetence? “
Naw!!, just transfered to another position and given a bonus!
So answer me one question Col Obama, your people follow orders and you gave an order that no one should be harmed due to their political beliefs so why was it necessary for Carney to continue to say that you will investigate what happened and fire or transfer the guilty parties?
Sounds like millions of bugs need to be placed in and around the White Hut.
The modern term is “bull obama,” or “bullobama” if you’re in a mood for SingleWords.
The only way Obama did not know, was if they told him while he was wrecked on drugs and could not remember.
Such transparent lies. This really is the most transparent administration in history.
I don’t care when the White House learned of the PROBE. The issue is whether the White House knew of (or worse, encouraged) the underlying IRS misconduct as it was happening.
CYA Obama CYA
I think that's correct.
Yup, poor bammy. The innocent victim once again.
I’m calling Bee Ess on this.
Q: Anybody know what this is?
For April 1, 2013
Ans: It is a typical daily staff provided detailed list of events and
activities presented to President Obama each morning which
informs him of items which require his immediate attention. It
allows the President to stay on top and out front of everything
that happens in the nation and the world.
White House: The President is not a crook.
White House: Because we said so.
Reuters: Okey-dokey, good enough for us. Print it!
