NRA tactics: Take no prisoners
WaPo ^ | 5/19/13 | Scott Higham & Sari Horowitz

As a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association with an “A+” rating for her voting record in the Tennessee House of Representatives, Debra Maggart never imagined that her political career would end this way.

Maggart, who chaired the Republican caucus, killed an NRA-backed bill that would have permitted Tennesseans to keep firearms in their parked vehicles wherever they went — work, school or the neighborhood bar.

Months later, Maggart was stunned to see NRA-sponsored ads on billboards in her district. Her face was next to a picture of President Obama. The ads proclaimed: “Sure, Rep. Debra Maggart Says She Supports Your Gun Rights. Of Course, He Says the Same Thing.”

anyone who didn’t see who Manchin was before the last 2 elections that he won, was thinking with their union thug mentality and hoping he would save their guns.

“sorry I though you were saying Screw the NRA”

I think you responded to the wrong person, because I understood what you were trying to say.

“As a pro-Second Amendment person and a life member of the NRA, I was just shocked they did this to me,” Maggart said in an interview.

If you're pro-Second Amendment, then why did you use your influence to kill a bill that bolsters it?

NRA/ILA gave Manchin an "A" rating and endorsement in both the 2010 election to replace Sheets Byrd, and again in the regular 2012 election. So, you're telling me that Chris Cox was thinking with his "union thug mentality and hoping he would save their guns"? It's as good an explanation as any ...

She deserves it! Not being able to lock your weapon in your POV limits folks from carrying. It should also apply to school properties and events and all state property.

Bad title; “take no prisoners”. It should have been NRA stands on principal.

Our long fought for CC law in WI contains a provision that mandates (under certain storage requirements) no one can ban CC weapons in parked, locked personal vehicles. Why? Because if you want to go to a store that is posted what are you supposed to do with your weapon?

OK, I read your link to the NRA PVF article. It adds political procedural details that were omitted from the WaPo article. Thanks for the link. I’m not one that makes a habit of posting from the WaPo and the broad scope of the article meant they didn’t give the deeper details on Maggart. The article still has value to show the power of the NRA to bring previously-reliable pols to accountability. That’s a valuable message in the current circumstances and the reason behind my posting.

She was opposed in the Republican primary and her challenger won. She claims she was lied about and paints herself a victim. The NRA PVF article linked earlier in the thread provides interesting details that show Maggart was the author of her own defeat.

I think our shall-issue CCW law in MI had a provision baring CCW in schools and court buildings.

The Sheriff put a sign to that effect on the Hillsdale County Courthouse.

The Judge ordered it be removed at once. He said his court would be governed by the US Constitution, including the 2nd amendment!

To this day there is no sign barring weapons from that court.

screw the NRA

It is apparent that you have not noticed the NRA is one a very few organizations that are standing up for our bill of rights. Your attitude just prompted me to pull the flyer out of my recycle bin and send them another check - it is always put to great use up their at NRA headquarters. You posted a fine comment today - prompted action on my part.

THANKS.

Actually...if conservatives would act the way the NRA does...we would never have John McCain as a Senator or presidential candidate

I like that the NRA stood firm On a gun control politician...too many times GOP voters make excuses for supporting a politician who is obviously liberal

She says NRA turned on her.....Ha !

I’m the NRA’s banker Debra, me, the voter, my dues and donations to NRA and other such organizations are the source of the NRA’s funds. Those that monitor polidiots like you who try to circumvent the constitution. They say who you are, what you do and myself, members of the NRA or not, get to decide if what you did was constitutional and or conservative by voting.

NRA doesn’t vote Debra, they are the sentry of the Second Amendments security. They tell the membership and general public what you did.

Debra ....I can’t be everywhere, all the time, your state or mine thus I pay to have folks like the NRA to seek trash like you out.

Debra ya took an oath to uphold the constitution. Then didn’t honor that oath.

Bye !

Why do politicians that carry around a lightning rod seem so surprised when they get what they ask for? Did she think her NRA membership card implied some sort of electoral insurance against accountability?

I'm guessing she didn't learn a thing from Ms. Lewinski - just paying lip service will not endear you to those you are trying to impress...

Too bad she had to learn the hard way.
