E.W. Jackson, a minister and attorney from Chesapeake, pulled off a stunning upset last night, topping six rivals for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.
Jackson fended off a late charge by Pete Snyder, a Northern Virginia technology entrepreneur, capping an epic four-ballot battle at the Richmond Coliseum that lasted nearly 10 hours.

Jackson was born on January 13, 1952 in Chester, Pennsylvania, the great-grandson of slaves.[2] His parents separated when he was a child, and he spent most of his childhood in a foster home.[3]
He eventually joined the United States Marine Corps, serving for three years. Following the Marines, he entered the University of Massachusetts Boston and received his degree in three years.[4] In 1978, he earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and practiced law in the Boston area for 15 years.[5]
He received a degree from the Harvard Divinity School, and became a preacher with the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Boston.[4]
Jackson taught administrative law at Northeastern University, and commercial law at Strayer University’s campuses in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
Raised a Democrat, his religious beliefs led him to embrace conservatism.[3] While in Boston, he appeared on several radio shows on WHDH, and hosted a nationally syndicated talk show, “Earl Jackson Across America.”[6]
In 1996, he joined with the Christian Coalition to head “The Samaritan Project,” an outreach program that distributed $500,000 to churches that were victims of arson. He served as a minister with the chapel of the Boston Red Sox for five years, and also served as the protestant chaplain for the Boston Fire Department.[4]
In June 1998, he was consecrated a bishop. Later that year, he and his family moved to Chesapeake, Virginia, and founded Exodus Faith Ministries.
On July 4, 2010, Jackson established Staying True to America’s National Destiny (STAND)[7] as a grassroots political organization, noted for its conservative stances on issues such as abortion, marriage, and government. In the same month, he made headlines[8] for his views condemning the New Black Panther Party in regard to voter intimidation.[9]
In 2012, he recorded a video appeal that generated national attention to blacks to leave the Democratic Party, saying it has abandoned the values of the black community and that blacks had developed a “slavish devotion” to the party.[10] He has spoken in black churches across the country on the issues facing the country and says he has received overwhelmingly positive responses
I will also argue that at least 60% of the folks at the Convention yesterday have either direct or indirect ties to their local Tea Party organizations. They voted for the Bishop - so I see it really as a win for the Tea Party organizations, minus some of their leaders.

VA is a purple state. The race for governor will be very close. If the Dems get anywhere near the turnout they did in 2008 and 2012 in Northern VA, McAuliffe will win. The demographics of VA have been changing rapidly over the years. Immigration and minority birthrates will make VA blue in a decade.
The Obama scandals will hopefully affect the Dem turnout. Cuccinelli is a real conservative and a tireless and great campaigner. He could also be an energizing force for the Dems who have demonized him as a right wing radical. But make no mistake about it, this will be a close race.

Ken Cuccinelli is the most anti-RE candidate. He beat LG Bill Bolling at the organization game. When he was in the Commonwealth Senate, he constantly fought the RE in favor of the Constitution.
In general, the State Central Committee is comprised of 60% Tea Party and Ron/Rand Paul folks. The complete Virginia delegation stood against the ploy launched at the national convention last year - and lost. But they stood united against the RNC RE/Romney move that passed. Day by day, the Republican Party of the Virginia is becoming transformed.

Funny... I can remember the time when the same thing was said, except with "Republican" replacing "Tea Party."
Slavish devotion to any "movement" or "party" is what got us into this mess in the first place. No party is the answer; conservatism is. If your devotion is to conservatism then your party is simply a vehicle. If your devotion is to your party, then your conservatism is a vehicle... to be abandoned when convenient.

The Tea Party Federation including the Richmond Tea Party endorsed Stewart and Obenshain. Yes, Donna endorsed Stimpson. Donna is a Libertarian and Campaign for Liberty chairperson for VA. She is a big Ron and Rand Paul supporter.
Middle Resolution and the Tea Party Federation held interviews of all the candidates for LtGov and AG. You can view the interviews on the Internet. The vast majority of Tea Party groups are part of the Federation. A representative of each Tea Party federation member participated in the interview process along with Middle Resolution.

Pure fantasy. I know for a fact that there was a major effort during the voting process to defeat Jackson by the Tea Party federation and MR people. The fear is that Jackson will not be a serious candidate and lacks the money and organization to run a real campaign.
There is no doubt that this was a serious defeat for the establishment similar to Jeff Frederick's victory as RPV Chairman.

I understood Jackson to say yesterday that he was born in Orange, Virginia. Perhaps he grew up in Orange, Virginia.
Our Obenshain bus left after the final voting so we missed Jackson’s acceptance speech. I hope it gets posted online so others can see his appeal.
I confirm what others have said about the transformation of the Virginia GOP over the past few years — the tea party candidates and influence is strong and the chairman, Pat Mullins gets and loves that.
My one confusion yesterday was candidate Pete Snyder who was introduced by Mike Farris and Oliver North yet seemed like such an establishment choice. I know his supporters are encouraging him to run next year for Senate. He might be a great guy and probably is considering who backs him.

I live in Fairfax County, the largest county in the state. In 2004, Kerry won FC, the first time a Presidential candidate did that since 1964. In 2008 Obama won by 110,000 votes and in 2012 by 90,000--mainly due to a huge effort by us to get out the GOP vote. This effort extended throughout the state yet Obama won handily. 30% of the population of FC is foreign born and those numbers continue to increase. Demography is destiny.
One third of the votes in the state are in NoVA. It is the fastest growing part of the state thanks to the honeypot of the federal government and crony capitalism. It will play a bigger and bigger role in statewide elections just like Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia.
