E.W. Jackson, a minister and attorney from Chesapeake, pulled off a stunning upset last night, topping six rivals for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.

Jackson fended off a late charge by Pete Snyder, a Northern Virginia technology entrepreneur, capping an epic four-ballot battle at the Richmond Coliseum that lasted nearly 10 hours.

It was one of the most interesting and dynamic political events I have ever attended. The "Republican Establishment" in Virginia did not win.

Nor did the Tea party.

I'm just guessing from outide Va, but this smacks of me of a niche type victory (ala Santorum or Huckabee in Iowa Caucus) that carries little chance of widespread support.) Am I wrong? - I certainly hope I am.

Jackson’s website points to connections to conservative activism.

He’s a lawyer and a preacher.

In accepting the nomination Jackson told the crowd that he “was an American, not an African-American.”

Well I hope he wins, and I tend to like him. And perhaps I am too sensitive to the niche type victory, which Iowa has shown to be a flawed concept election after election.

I’ve heard some of his supporters call in to WMAL before... they lauded him, and were very cogent disimmenators of the issues. That’s what I like to hear: supporters who are listening and understand the issues enough to volunteer as surrogates.

If he doesn’t play ball the pubbie establishment will deep six him.

Just ask Bret Schundler in NJ how that works. When the sitting pubbie governor supports the DIM candidate you know the pubbie establishment are crooks.

I was a delegate at the convention and voted in the nomination process. Jackson gave the best speech, but the reality is that he lacks the money and organization to conduct an effective campaign. It remains to be seen how that will affect the Governor and AG races.

There have been allegations of financial problems including bankruptcy with Jackson who has been a perpetual candidate for years in VA for all kinds of offices.

Corey Stewart received the VA Tea Party endorsement. He was the Tea Party candidate in this race. Pete Snider was the establishment candidate. Jackson is the gadfly candidate. IMO Jackson will be defeated soundly by the Dems in November.

I bet there will be a hue and cry by the establishment that we should have had a primary rather than a convention to nominate our candidates. There is no doubt that Jackson would have lost in a primary.

I’m in Virginia. I’m not familiar with Jackson. However, my Sunday paper says he’s known as a grassroots crusader for the Constitution and for social conservatism.

It says he is trained in the Baptist ministry. However, he trained at Harvard! That is a liberal teaching divinity school. Scares me to think what side of the training he got and kept. Pure Baptist or the liberal apostate side. I’d have to hear his messages to determine that.

Or heck, Mike Farris in Virginia. George Allen and Jim Gilmore moved forward after the 1993 election, but Farris never went anywhere again after a narrow loss to Don Beyer. .

Thanks for the inside look:
Now, with the IRS scandal - and this is one that will NOT go away - dove tailing with the train wreck of Obama Care - perhaps his Constitutional bent and speech making ability will work with Cuccinelli and work out. I also don’t think an inside crony like McAuliffe will sell well in light of all of this.

As I recall, Virginia’s 09 election was almost a straight up and down the ballot referendum on Obama, the candidates were almost not relevant - and Obama got shellacked. If its that kind of referendum in ‘13, I think Obama gets shellacked again.

Might I suggest you key on his Constitutional beliefs and not be so worried about his Harvard Divinity training. I don’t think he’s trying out for pastor at your church.

Does every conservative have to be a Tea Party affiliate?
