Up to 380,000 barrels of crude oil were previously produced by wells around the city of Raqqa and in the desert region to its east that are now in rebel hands - in particular Jabhat al-Nusra, the al-Qaeda off-shoot which is the strongest faction in this part of the country.
Now the violently anti-Western jihadist group, which has been steadily extending its control in the region, is selling the crude oil to local entrepreneurs, who use home-made refineries to produce low-grade petrol and other fuels for Syrians facing acute shortages.

Interesting that the retreating forces didn’t put the wells to the torch. The oil will make the rebels stronger. I’ll wager Assad gave the order to burn the wells and the commander on the scene found a reason why he couldn’t.
That’s unexpected. Who would have guessed that Obama’s strategy would help America’s enemies - again?

I wouldn't say "doomed"...but the clean-up of all this mess is certainly going to be messy...very very messy.

Remember the quaint days of Iran-Contra when Congress shut down the entire country for months to "get the bottom" of which rebel group received even a dime of aid?
Now, we are giving billions away to those who are our enemies, but we don't pay the Pentagon employees.

Poor likely the Syrians were too dumb to plan that far ahead or they simply assume they will retake the wells later and want them in good shape.
A "historical" ground breaking took place on the Fort Berthold Reservation on Wednesday. The event came at the conclusion of the Three Affiliated Tribes annual oil and gas expo in New Town.
Thunder Butte Petroleum Inc., the name of the new refinery, was originally estimated to cost $350 million. The cost went up as the project moved forward and overcame many obstacles.
Tex Hall, the chairman of the Three Affiliated Tribes, said planning for the project began in 2001. "The idea back then was to refine Canadian Tar Sands but that has been changed to Bakken oil." he said.
Hall explained "Thunder Butte" was named for one of the most sacred sites on the reservation. He said the site was chosen because of its size and proximity to a highway.
The project is being broken into four phases of construction, according to Richard Mayer, the chief executive officer of Thunder Butte Petroleum Services. He stated the refinery will provide cost savings to tribal members through fuel, propane and other fuels that will be processed at the facility.
Chairman Hall later said $40 million has been set aside for the development of the first stage of the project. The refinery could process up to 20,000 barrels of Bakken crude per day.
Homemade refineries, eh? I wonder how they “crack” the crude..?
“crude” is the operable word here. not elaborate at all. The ones I’m familiar with boil the crude in open barrels, rake off the tar, and basically repeat at the proper temp. to get down to essentially kerosene then gasoline. The guys who do this are crafty and gutsy and generally lucky and I’m pretty sure they go home smelling like a paving crew. They also make onehelluvamess with their leftovers.
