High gas prices are killing urban sprawl too. I think that’s part of the plan.

“I did a search on this, and the only thing I found was a forum post stating the sensor is a myth. I used to deal with these issues working for a tax agency (not anymore).”

I checked the manual, which, BTW, is TFU. It doesn’t say anything. However, the salesman seemed sincere in his warning and he actually works for VW, so I’m guessing he’d be inclined to tell the truth. There are color sensors for fuel, because I looked those up. As to the dye pack, why would he lie? However, it’s not worth the tax savings if the car was designed for one fuel and you use something with different characteristics. I did thoroughly clean the tank and, (thank God) I filled it at $1.98 per gallon. I’m still using it. It should last to later this year.

“n Europe, where diesels are much more popular, there are agents who literally sniff your exhaust to make sure you’re not burning French-fry oil.”

The other day I rode behind a diesel VW pick-up with bio diesel stickers all over it and belching black smoke that smelled much better than regular diesel.

That’s right. My first thought on reading this post was that the author obviously has not driven in Houston. The whole word has moved here, all have cars and they are all on the freeway system at the same time.

Wouldn’t take a bus even if I could.

Hah, I've had the opposite experience. When passenger-side front airbags first came out, one company called them a "Supplemental Restraint System" and abbreviated it SRS on the flap for the airbag. I had a salesman flat out tell me the SRS meant Special Racing Suspension. Needless to say, he did not get a sale.

Especially if the nearest food (the general store) is 5 miles away from your driveway. The nearest “real” grocery store. Everything else is nearly 20 miles away, so I don’t go to the nearest town unless I have a job, or need groceries/stuff-I like BF Egypt...

I love how people do a “study” and try to establish causes for effects that happen to match their prejudices.

1. Cars are too expensive for young people that can’t afford them - especially those that are unemployed or under employed and having to pay off massive college loan debt to get their degrees in prostate pleasuring and lesbian bondage. They are sharing rides and relying on friends, family and underground (affordable) transportation. If they have a car at all they are driving a 15 year old Honda. If you can barely afford a beat up old car you certainly don’t need a new truck or SUV to pull the RV or boat that you don’t have, either.
2. Gas is too expensive unless you are working enough to cover your travel - we are now used to paying $3 - $4 per gallon and I expect another “crisis” to raise the bar to $4 - $5 soon.
3. If you are not earning any money, you are not buying that nice house in the burbs - you are living in an apartment somewhere closer to the nearest city and not traveling far (unless you are back living with your parents and using them for transportation).

Bottom line - the likely cause for any drop in car usage is Ohomo’s poor economy, not some lib wet dream about people becoming more green.

It sounds like the Liberal plan of driving up gas prices to reduce people driving may be working.

I take all these studies with a grain of salt. There’s a good chance that car ownership is not declining, but an agenda driven agency is trying to promote that idea to make public transportation seem more acceptable and fashionable.

I actually liked the salesman, but he either didn’t know or didn’t mention that the 2010 Sportwagen TDI was the GTI performance package with a different body. All I knew was it handled and performed amazingly well. Then, I ran into an enthusiast who knew everything about the car including how to tune it. (I didn’t tune it for the same reason I didn’t tune my Marauder. When your car is already dragging the biggest penis in its class, what the heck would I do with more horsepower? I never drive either car anywhere close to its limits. In Florida if you’re going 55 over the limit it’s an automatic trip to jail.)

I think the “dye pack” is a misunderstanding of the urea injection system on most new diesels. The special catalyst and urea injection treatments of exhaust meet much higher emission standards.

That could be. Didn't think about the new urea systems.

And I think the sensitive particulate filter is part of the same system. Also, untaxed diesel may be the high-sulfur variety, which messes up a lot of the newer systems.

PIRG....What, pray tell, is that?

Public Interest Research Group. Completely non-partisan, of course.

I have 1 car, 1 hot rod, and a pickup truck and sometimes get out and drive just to be driving!

$4/gallon gas.

Gee, who thought we would drive less with $4/gal gas?

Maybe we need a 10 million dollar government study regarding this.

Exactly what I was going to say. This is all nonsense.
I have a 2005 auto that I honestly cannot afford to replace at this time. And gas just jumped over 4.00 again here last week. This directly effects how much I drive, or rather, don’t!

A number of us freshmen at ESU got roped into PIRG. We were told that they were a fine bunch of fellows...just interested in lowering the cost of bank overdrafts.

Of course that WAS NOT the case - in fact they were Left-Wing rabid animals, that were trying to shut down nuclear power and surrender in the Cold War.

They got my money the first time...but that was it.

This isn’t hard - have a designated driver. I do it all the time. I don’t drink very much so I drive the folks around who do.
